2011 Explorer Limited
A few days ago I noticed some coolant under the front of my 2011 Explorer. Wasn't too much so I checked the levels and topped it off. A few days later I noticed even more and had to top off the reservoir again. I took it in as I couldn't really pin down the source and the shop said it was the water pump that was leaking. I wanted to use the truck on Saturday and my normal guy couldn't get me in. This shop quoted me $2,200 for the job. I believe I saw here the range for the repair could be $1,500-$2,000. I picked it up from that shop and dropped it off at my normal place. John, my guy quoted me $1,700. He said that's the best he could do because it's so labor intensive. $1,300 for just the labor. Man, has anyone here and I will preference with normal tools tackled this job? I'm a weekend wrencher but I have a feeling this would take me a month to do. With working from home and having a 1995 jeep wrangler as a 3rd vehicle I could get by. I have no clue on the timing chains. I just let the professionals have this one. I did see the part was only $146.....

If it has been leaking for a while chances are that the coolant has found its way into the engine and contaminated the oil. Check the oil on the dipstick to see if appears 'milky'. If the water is being changed, it might be a good idea to also replace the timing chain while everything is apart.

The first shop confirmed there was no coolant in the oil yet. That water pump replacement part list post is great, but for a job like this. I'd need a specific youtube video. I guess its over my abilities.

It is definitely not a job for a novice or someone dependent on their vehicle. My shop charges between $1350-$2500 to do the water pump plus timing components if needed. A flush is needed if you have coolant intermix. Prices depend on model (Explorer, Edge, Taurus, MKS ect.), they share the same stupid design in the 3.5, 3.7 fwd
