This time for once, I wasn't just driving to a race, but was actually involved in one!
Last night, I was driving along minding my own business when I came up to a stoplight next to an early '90s BMW 735i. Waiting at the red light I look over and see him start inching forward, then he popped it into neutral and revved the motor up at me. I always liked the silky smooth sound of the Bimmer I-6, so I smiled and gave him a big thumbs up.
Well, this must have been his interpretation of me wanting to race, so he inches up further, and I figure why not...If I lose, it's expected.
Light turns green, and we take off, and I probably had a good carlength on him by the time we got thru the intersection, and I see in my side mirror he's not gaining on me...In fact, I'm even pulling him a little harder! By this time we're going at least 60 in a 35 MPH zone, so I show brake lights and slow back to the speed limit. We both are driving side by side to the next light, and the same thing happens! I certainly didn't forsee another drag race since I figured I'd humiliated him enough already, but the light turned green, he took off full throttle and I followed suit, pulling away from him once again! Slow back down to the speed limit, now he's going to try and run me from a roll...Kicked it down and pulled about half a carlength on him from ~40 to better than 65 MPH this time, and I could still see his front bumper in my side mirror!
Slowed back to the speed limit, and then he beeped the horn at me, flipped me the middle finger, then turned off on a side street.

Oh well...Win some, lose some, I guess.

Needless to say I was impressed with the way the ol' Explorer performed. That was the first time I was ever able to really go head to head against another car that was somewhat worthy competition. Of course the ricers will try to race anyone, but they get killed like gnats in a bug zapper.

I'll probably get depressed if I find out just how lethargic the 3.5L 7-series is, as I talked to a friend of mine who's a Bimmer nut, and he said the 735 is all about touring comfort, not speed. It's too heavy to be a good performer in a drag race. But...The owner of the Bimmer must have thought it was fast, otherwise he'd have probably never tried to run me.

It was a fun evening, nonetheless.

*Disclaimer: The road that we raced on was quiet and somewhat isolated...It's not like we were doing this on a congested city street. It still doesn't condone the speeding, but at the very least, it's safer than if there was lots of other traffic present. I would have never done it if that were the case.

That driver must be the suck of all drivers.. or kept the vehicle in 1st gear :p:

But seriously tho, I've raced the 4.0 SOHC automatic against the stock manual 1.6L Civic (non-VTEC) and the Civic can keep up pretty well from a standing start (I was driving the Civic). Looks like its time for me to go look for some 90's 7-series :D

I don't know too much about early BMW's, but I know the later 90's ones will haul. I was driving my dad's 740il, and a guy in what looked like a 00 XLT wanted to race, and I didn't go at first, but then when I did, I went by him like he was standing still, and from the sounds, he was at WOT.

I would say in the 90's bmw's got a big power jump..

Sometimes it's down to the driver in a drag race, u know, how much nerve you have, anyway "Way to go Explorer" :) , oh, and you too EB :)

people always try to race me in my explorer....v6 lifted with 36's...they dont like when i swerve at them. on take off....
