98 Explorer Sport OHV
basically i have had the rattling coming from my sport with the OHV engine since about 95k. i bought the car at 82k. i am now at 170k and its as annoying as ever. never really got worse, just kept going and going. i think its high time to replace the rockers, pushrods, and lifters. problem is...i dont know where to get them.

i found the rockers and the push rods on ebay, but they are remanufactured stock ones. so...why would i want to replace the stock ones with more stock onces, when the problem all along seems to be too soft of metal, which is causing ridiculous premature wear?

sooo, my question is, does anyone know where i can pick up these parts for cheap (relatively) that are maybe hardened, or improved/updated?

My OHV has about 104K on it and rattles at high RPM. Intrested to see what the fix is.

i have the same sound took it too a mechanic today and the OHV rattle is from the Lifters apparently ...hope this helps

i think its more than just the lifters. from the pictures i have seen, just about the whole valve train gets screwed up on these OHV engines.

kinda sounds like a timing chain too though. hmm, not sure what to do now.

Honestly, I wouldnt worry about it. It will still run another 100K

i still can't find any more sources other than ebay for the lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms other than just the stock/rebuilt/reman.

thanks bro

iceman: it is just too damn annoying though :(

by rattle do you mean sounds like rods knocking lightly or by a tapping at idle?

Mine's got 226,000 on it and will tick at idle due to the rockers and push rods being worn, under load it will rattle like pea-gravel in a tin can but not knock like a bad bearing.

My OHV started doing it at 130000. been thrashing it everyday since, runs like a champ draggin a can of rocks. im at 180000 now. we'll see how long it last.

Interesting, so the OHV engine has issue just as bad as our SOHV engines.

I guess we can all say thanks to FORD.

Mine has a ticking sound (97 OHV) that gets faster when the RPM's increase. Is not very loud could this be a lifter as well? I can only hear it when its warm. Sounds like it coming from the passengers side near the lower part of the firewall.

98 OHV, nearing 140k... no ticking, but I've run synthetic oil for the last 10k, I hear that helps

the only noise I get from under the hood is the power steering pump... that POS whines more than my mother-in-law

could the ticking be related to an accessory like the alternator, pulleys, exhaust manifold, etc

Someone correct me if im wrong but I think that is a synthetic blend. I think there gold cap and one other of there oils is a full synthetic. Try switching to there extended performance or another oil like amsoil, royal purple, redline, or another oil that is a true 100% synthetic oil.

Mobile 1 advertises it being a synthetic oil but I think almost all of there oils are a synthetic blend, a lot like motorcraft oil.

If you ask me a car company should build cars and an oil company should make oil.

Give it a shot and it could help. The extended drain intervals sure wont hurt the wallet.

Im not trying to turn this into an oil pissing match but give it a shot. Just trying to help. I know unwanted engine noise is annoying while your trying to drive.

Yes it is annoying! and any advice is welcomed, the only problem I have is that amsoil, royal purple etc is just so damn expensive for a $1500 truck:D

It pays for itself with how much longer it lasts. Get a prefered customer membership at amsoil and you get 20% off. Its only 20 bucks a year and they ship it right to your door.
