the infamous rattling 98 4.0 OHV

Is this really that common? I have no noises with 156k on my OHV.

It has had Mobil 1 since 59k though.

This is common in many OHV engines. I had an old F 150 300 I6 that rattled real bad at idle, as well as my current 2000 4.0 OHV explorer. The F 150 got 426,000 on it Yes, 426,000. The only thing that I replaced was normal maintenence, and an oil pan. That truck rattled the day I drove it off the lot, until I was rearended, then I let her go. I wouldn't worry about a light rattle like that. Its just the lifters makin a little noise. My explorer has been doing it for 50,000 miles.

sooo, my question is, does anyone know where i can pick up these parts for cheap (relatively) that are maybe hardened, or improved/updated?

Deltacam has a set of rockerarms and pushrods (hardened tips/cups) for about $200.

good customer service and decent price...

mine was ticking/clicking/rattling (whatever you want to call it) when i first got it with 65k miles on it. but i like synthetic oil and mobil 1 is my favorite. so i started using 5w30 mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil. it's the oil that's designed to last for 15k miles. yeah it's kind of expensive but i think it's well worth it. i also use the fram extended guard oil filter XG8A. it's a filter designed for 7k mile oil change intervals, which is how often i change my oil. but anyways after i changed to that oil/filter combo, which was my first oil change, it almost immediately took care of the problem. then i ran sea foam through it and changed the oil again and it hasn't ticked ever since. might want to try it out first instead of taering your motors apart.
