OK, I'm making this thread to show the progress of rollpans being made by myself and James T (I know you're starting one soon James). I probably won't start the actual construction for a few weeks but I am starting the designing process.

Here are some pictures of the bumper off. I took these pics to showcase just how much framerail that is going to have to be cut off. I'm not sure if it's the same as 98+, but I'm almost sure it's similar.

great pics man, you saved me alot of trouble! :D

Good to see its not a big of a deal as I thought it would be. Doesnt look like itll hurt safety in a crash and the spare should be kept there too!

Are you cutting down an F150 pan or what?

the spare will either have to be re-located or thrown in the trash. or, you could have a 195/50/15 mounted on it to trim some space. :D

BTW- im guessing this thread is a call for me to get off my @ss and do some work...

Yes I am cutting down and molding an F150 rollpan.

It wouldn't take a lot of fabrication to keep the spare but I don't want the tire sticking below my pan.

shoot, hadnt thought about it hanging down too far.
No wonder no company has done this. Lots of issues to address.

hmm interesting.
I hope this whole project doesnt end up like all other roll pan posts.

But since its not a "im gonna make a rollpan for everybody" type thing - it looks promissing.
I will follow this one closely.. should be cool
Good work hartmen and jamest

I don't make false promises. If I do, it's not going to affect anyone but myself. My project is going to be a one-off rollpan, and I'm pretty sure James's project is gonna be the same. Everybody else is pretty much on their own, but I am making this thread in case someone else wants to attempt to make one.

jamest i thought u said u would rather shoot yourself in the foot than create ur own rollpan? lol. good luck hartman

exactly- will be neat to see what all it takes to modify a f150 pan to fit a X

i would, but it looks like im gonna have to shoot myself in the foot anyway. no matter what- its getting a pan. only problem is i wont be able to begin on it for atleast another month or so...

What kind of gun? I suggest just a BB gun, that way you dont get hurt and you stay true to your word. lol jk.

Good luck guys.

Hard to tell right now. It will take a lot of work.

I also want to keep updated

Derek,
What approach are you taking to create it?

I'm starting with an F150 rollpan. First thing I'll have to do is shorten it, but I'm not sure how much yet. Then I'll have to reshape the ends so that they match my Explorer's body. After that is done, the very laborious task of sanding/filling, sanding/filling, sanding/filling, has to be done. After it's ready for paint, I have to find a way to mount it. Then, I have to hook up some license plate lights up and I'll be set.

Lots of work.

I will certainly do that once I receive the pan.

Good luck on your project Derek.

Maybe I'll get off my duff this summer and get one for mine :D
