So awhile back I posted a thread titled, is my A4LD terminal? The answer to that question is YES. It finally pooped out on me yesterday. Im not really stressed about it cause I knew it was coming from the day I bought it. I was lucky enough to get 22k miles out of it. This is what happened.

Awhile back I was hearing a metal rubbing sound like a bolt working its way out somewhere, but only while I was at a stop, in gear. After bout 3 months that went away.

As the season changed and the weather got colder, it started not wanting to shift into 2nd first thing in the morning. But after it did once, it would work fine for the rest of the day. It also felt at times like the motor was working harder to push the rig down the road than other times. Then sometimes it felt like I didnt need to use as much throttle to get to speed.

Well yesterday it was running good. I felt what seemed like a delayed engagement into first when leaving from a stop. It had been doing that occasionally but worsening.

I came to a stop at a light just before I got on the freeway. When the light turned green and I began to accelerate it felt like I just bumped it into neutral. Except that it still had some pressure. If i revved up to like 4k to 5k it would just barely move. Was just enough to get me off the road. It also didnt leak out a bunch of ATF. Infact I only observed a spot no bigger than a dollar bill.

So now, being an apt dweller and unemployed, I have to rip it out and rebuild. I have all the time in the world and nowhere to work. More punches to roll with. I'll figure it out. Any hoo, so thats what happened.

Any guesses as to what might have happened internally? Im gonna buy a new governor, and a master rebuild kit. It'll be nice to have a new tranny.

I'm going threw pretty much same thing. Coming to stop light it down shifted to 1 real hard and would no longer shift up threw gears and no reverse. Went threw bunch of troubleshooting (tranny flush and filter, replaced rear servo, replaced valve body) now picking up used tranny tomarrow. I was real surprised at how hard it's been trying to find a used tranny with decent miles. Finally located one locally with 91k for $400 so it should work out good. Got prices for rebuilts from $800 up to $1700 and everyone had different thoughts on the problem, I don't trust any of them felt like I was going to get takin for a ride. I'm throwing in a used one for now and keep my old one and learn how to rebuild my own. Good luck and there are some really good shade tree mechanics on this site to help you out.

Any ideas where I can easily find a reasonably priced all inclusive re-build kit?. If Im gonna do this I want it to be done right. No point going in and half ass-ing the job.

If you might be thinking about a simple replace, I have a spare a4ld sitting in a shop in Onalaska. It has already been worked on. To my knowledge it never 'failed' it was just 'upgraded'.
