I HAVE A 1999 V-8 EXPLORER. TODAY I INSTALLED A NEW THERMOSTAT. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THE THERMOSTAT TO SEAT RIGHT. I KNOW I HAVE THE RIGHT ONE. EVERYTIME I THINK I GOT IT, THE DAMN THING LEAKS WHEN I FILL IT!! DO YOU GUYS KNOW IF THE GASKET IS SUPPOSED TO GO BETWEEN THE HOUSING AND THE THERMOSTAT OR THE BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE THERMOSTAT. I KNOW IT SOUNDS CONFUSING, BUT I AM SAYING IT RIGHT. NEED HELPM ASAP. THANKS

Ok the gasket is supposed to be in between the thermostat and the engine. The gasket is supposed to be stretched around the outside of the thermostat.

I hate caps

thanks for the reply jason25. but what you described is for a v-6 engine. i have a v-8. the t-stat housing and gasket are totally different.i also have a v-6 explorer and changed out the thermostat. that was a piece of cake. thanks anyways.

It has been a while since I changed a t-stat on a 5.0L, but there is an easyway to determine where the gasket is supposed to go. Look at the housing and at the manifold, one will have a slight lip where the t-stat rests. If the lip is on the manifold, the t-stat goes on the intake and the gasket goes between the t-stat and the housing. If the lip is on the housing, the t-stat goes in the housing and the gasket goes between the manifold and the t-stat.
