ok which way does the thermostat go in... does the end with the spring go into the engine core or does it go into the housing that the hose is connected too... The box that the thermostat came in says the spring end goes into the engine core.

Not 100% sure about your OHV V6, but on my V8:

The "spring" goes into the intake manifold, and the check valve for air bleeding goes ontop.

The spring end into the engine/intake. In other words, always opposite the radiator hose.

As V8BoatBuilder stated make sure the check valve is points up when installing or the cooling system can get air bound and function poorly. BTW nice pic Aaron...

you won't need any silicone on your 4.0 OHV thermostat, it comes with a rubber seal that does the job, just FYI

Thanks John - it's from the headgaskets and valve job rebuild. The gasket I had was $0.99 from autozone and paper, the Ford ones aren't too different. I've always had good results from smearing a bit of RTV on each side, if nothing else it keeps the gasket in place during installation.
