Thermostat

I have a quesstion I read somewhere on this forum that a thermostat that it stuck open could cause the engine light come on. My thermostat never reaches the normal temp and my engine light keeps coming on a few minutes after driving the truck (93 EB). I have cleaned the MAS and changed all the sensors and pcv valve. Will a stuck themostat caust the engine light to come on? Thank you for your time.

Welcome to this forum! I would suggest that you have the code read so you will know which part is causing your problem.

Engine runs cool..... Many of us have temp gauges that only read up to the "N" or the "O". If that's what you are seeing, you may be running hot enough.

If in doubt, I would replace the t stat; cheap and relatively easy to replace.

Pull the codes and replace the tstat. If it's sticking open, it may stick closed which can cause you major problems if it overheats. Tstats are normal maintenance. Make sure you get the o-ring gasket as well. Not all the replacements include it.

Mt thermosstat dosen't even reach the "N" as soon as it does then it drops all the way back down. As far as pulling the codes I live in Ca. and they want $170 to use the machine as it is now illeagel for them to read the codes for free....

my t-stat is stuck open and my check engine light doesn't come on. going to atempt to replace the tstat this weekend though, so she warms up nice for the winter!

That sucks! Anyone else in California who cannot get their codes read for free at the local Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc.? :fire:

If true, get yourself a scanner, and a sign and set youself up in a parking lot and offer to read codes for $10 or whatever the market will bear. You could set it up as a franchise operation similar to the windshield repair people.

That's a good idea I could make a few bucks that way
I'll change the thermostat any way then off with the exhaust.

I used to have a motor that wouldn't register temp......it would alwas read cold (extreme left).......not even touching the N.

I changed the t-stat......and the temp gauge sender unit......now, it reads between N and O.

To test the gauge and sender unit. Key On Engine Off. Disconnect the sender wire. Ground the wire............the gauge will jump to the extreme hot side. When disconnected from the ground.......it will return to the left (cold side). IF all goes well.......you know your gauge is O.K. Sender units are cheap, if you have to replace it.........a new gauge is another story.
