Hey all, was wondering if any of you have used seafoam in your explorers and how it was used. my cousins used it in his 97 mustang GT and swears by it. Id like to know your input. Thank you!

Some people call it snake oil, I guess because they think the smoke is caused by the oil content in the Seafoam.

If you have carbon build up, Seafoam will remove it if used properly.

They way I suggest you use it is to set your warmed up engine at a high idle and suck the seafoam into the engine using a convenient vacuum hose.
When you have about 1/2 the can left let the engine really gobble it up until it stalls, that way everything inside the combustion chamber is soaked.

Let it sit overnight then when you start it the next day there will be a lot of smoke.
Take it for a drive, on the highway if you can so the engine is revving and blowing the carbon out and so that it doesn't stick in the cat.

Seafoam is only of any use if you have carbon build up in the combustion chamber.

Some people say the Techron product is better.

A bottle of Techron in the gas tank every couple months is good stuff.

Can you use Techron as a once off cleaner like you do with Seafoam?

We don't get Techron here. Caltex used to have a "drive your engine clean" product but not anymore.

I don't believe so. I think it's just meant to clean your fuel system.

i'm in the "snake oil" group when it comes to Sea Foam, but Techron has been proven to be the best fuel system cleaner on the market. my vehicles don't get that many miles put on them per year, so i throw a bottle of Techron around once a year.

My 5.0 gets a light ping under moderate load after maybe a year (maybe more, don't keep track).

Seafoam takes care of it and the ping is gone for a good while.

I seafoamed my Ex through the brake booster vacuum hose. Did it make a difference? meh. I don't know. Maybe so, maybe placebo effect. It did make a s#$%load of smoke!!
I also run Techron through about once every 6 mos or so. No timing chain issues... I am not sure if I had the TSB done or not. I have to go back through all my paperwork. At 185k she runs great and I intend to drive her till she gives up the ghost.

There is a 1989 Chevy truck in my area on Craigslist that needs a new motor. The guy selling it says the engine went bad from using Seafoam.

I am guessing he didn't use it the way it was meant to be used.

He probably hydrolocked the engine if I had to guess.

Seafoam works great. Techron cleaner in the gas tank works good as well.
