Thoughts on SOHC not being able to idle with low gas tank level.

My Explorer did same thing, I removed gas tank and found the strainer on fuel pump had come apart. It was sucking the shreds of the strainer into the fuel pump. Change pump and strainer with a quality part. China parts the fuel sending unit doesn't register good. Try tbis.
