So I've had some issues with battery drain (intermittently)

went out to use truck (stays parked a lot)
dead, had started 2 weeks prior after being parked for a month,
tried a noco booster pack, it kept faulting and shutting off (no battery present)
removed gnd from battery and tried again - noco shut off again (no battery present)

brought car over and hooked up cables, went to start
there was smoke coming from under dash
removed jumper cables
tried to see smoke, somewhere under dash drivers side
hooked up cables again, some more smoke, finished smoking

turned key, attempted crank, battery too low...
hooked up noco, and it started
of course everything now smells of burnt electronics

decided to check if lamps are working - safety....
all front bulbs work (headlights, signals, running lamps)
no rear bulbs functional except for reverse lights

Fuse 7, 22 are fine, and 12V on both sides of the fuse - supply wiring fine

since signalling and stuff works on front, assuming SJB may be functional

possible C2280A issue?? (burnt wiring - not checked yet (guessing), but would think a fuse would have blown)

possible SJB issue??, fuse will not blow if failure condition is below 15A

ignition switch??

Any Thoughts anyone...anyone..bueller...bueller

Well it's almost a month and I haven't put much effort into the truck
this weekend past I replaced the SJB:
did this procedure a few times, connecter removal from SJB
connectors are locking with those rotating tabs
the two outer (brake, accelerator pedal side) need to be removed first
then SJB pulled down a lot and the three fender side can be unplugged
reverse order to re-assemble

SJB swap had no affect on rear light behaviour

Taking apart more of the dash - I found the 12V to the stereo (aftermarket smoked) - still worked though, may be a low voltage high current situation when battery was dead.

The drivers latch also decided to thake a ****, locks itself (never stays unlocked) - swapped latch

At this point the conclusion is the smoke was an unrelated incident, and lights probably failed earlier - I only checked functionality after smoke

suspecting the wiring issue going to back of the truck (since third brake light does not work) inside the cab may be compromised.

Final update on this issue
SJB - ok (now pretty good at taking SJBs in and out of ford explorer platform vehicles :) )
Wiring - ok

..sometimes the problems are the simple things

- All rear brake lamps, high mount brake and running lamps were dead at once
important note: they were all LED modules (not mentioned before)

Somehow dead battery probably 0v.
(**my theory) boosting , noco boosting caused a reverse voltage spike taking out all the LED modules on brake circuit.

Interesting thing the 10A fuse for trailer reverse lights was blown Fuse16 in SJB - unrelated?

At this point I buttoned up the dash, and decided to measure 12V at high mount switch - present

A Big Fuuuuuuuuuuu***
An incorrect conclusion drawn from events leading up to failure

time spent was about 10hours fighting/wrestling removing, swapping SJBs multiple times

...check simple obvious stuff first that are needed for function
