I have a stock 91XLT and would like to improve performance. I just ordered the Splitfire wireset and P4 plugs. I am thinking about the throttle body with the
K&N filter. I found a site that sells the
TB for $199. I would appreciate any comments
on what I can expect from this combo?
HP and Performance.
Thanks

The throttlebody really is something to do after you have made other mods. I did mine after the full exhaust, KKM, and all else. It made a noticable difference after all that, but nothing major. The KKM setup made a much bigger difference.

I have a larger TB on my '97 OHC. You really don't get a noticeble performance imporvements with respect to horsepower and fuel economy. What you do get is an improvement in throttle response. Very helpful in moving a 5400lbs. beast off the line.....

Joe-I must say that $199 is a darn good price for a TB; what website did you find it on???

I will agree with what has been said and add this.

I have raced 5.0's for several years and often see guys that are new to going off and buying big TB's or even worse spending $350-$500 on a new intake as one of there first mods. The key here is that the air intake of an engine is a copperative effort of all components meaning,,,if you want to reap the benefits of a bigger TB you will also need a better flowing intake, better flowing intake ports on your heads, a bigger (I hate to use the word bigger but we will get into that later) cam, and a better flowing MA meter. without upgrading all at the same time you will always have some part of your intake system holding you back from making MAJOR improvements in HP. That is not to say that you won't get a lot of little improvements buying these items one buy one if your wallet can't take the hit all at once as is the case with most of us.

The key is to understand what you're changing and to not expect to much! Remeber, because it doesn't feel better doesn't mean you aren't making an improvement. The ASSonometer lies TRUST ME! You can put a big set of gears in anything and make it feel fast, but it will wind out in 400 feet.

My overall suggestion is plan wisely, be resonable with your goals and understand that the real benefit may not show up till later!

Good Luck!

Thanks for your comments
The TB sounds premature at this point.
What do you all think about adding a
Super Chip. I've been looking at
Dyno Sources. It sells fo $325.00.I also
ordered the KKM setup

i am going to have to agree w/ these other guys, there are better ways to spend your $200 than trowing a new TB on a stock car. the price is about right actually, it is not an outstanding deal, but a few bucks cheaper than the rest.

get the new air filter (try a KKM one, they rock and they make it for our old 91s) and get a good catback w/ 2.25" pipes. flow or borla is my suggestion. these 2 shouldnt cost you more than $450 total.

the new wires and plugs are good too, i didnt think that there was going to be much difference when i put in my splits but i was impressed, especially since my old ones had been there since i bought the car in '96.

i think for your money this is the way to go, even if you got a k&n and the catback it should only be around $200 if you go w/ flow and that is a better way to spend your money...

good luck...

Joe-Go with an K&N drop-in and modify your airbox. It'll give you great results for a fraction of KKM. Then work on getting a catback and possibly headers. I have a 91XLT also. I've done the airbox modification since I already had the K&N drop-in. I have Splitfire wires with Bosch P+4s. I also have custom 2.25 inch pipes through a Super Converter and a Ultra-flo stainless straight through muffler. I'm in the market for headers next. I'm looking either at BBKs or MAC products for headers. I think once all the parts are in, I'll be fairly satisfied. This has nothing to do with performance but, I just ordered a aluminum rear end cover to replace my fiberglass one. MAC products (www.macprod.com) makes a aluminum replacement (Ford 8.8) for $134 plus shipping. It also has a filler and drain hole. Hope this helps.

KKM makes a kit for our old explorers? I never new that the fact that "they didnt make one for my car" ever held anyone back on this site, (well maybe the non-mechanically inclined ones) but i have a K&N FIPK from a 95-97 on my 91 sport. The fact that "they didnt make one for my vehicle" didn stop me, I made my own. Dead Link Removed
