Throttle Body Mod on 2002 sohc 4.0

Aldive,
What was the part # for the UD crank pulley? That site is having issues. I am in it now.

For any '04+ owners looking at doing this, there's a few differences that I've addressed in this thread:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191709

Doing the same mod listed in this thread on the newer electronic throttle style is super easy, and really helps out on throttle response as well as a few HP.

Excellent:thumbsup:
All this added data is very valuable:salute: Now we have information for the other 04 and newer owners.

I am happy to say that I feel satisfied with this mod. I have not been able to really do a highway test yet. So this test will be purely local driving.

UDP/harmonic balancer for a 2002 4.0 SOH

Got a response from Aspracing.com for the underdriive pulley for the 4.0 SOHC.

Here is the price and part number.

"Price for part number 526400 is $265.00. I should have them
in stock early next week.

Any other questions please let me know.

Thanks,
Candice"

Noise:

I noticed a whistle from inside truck going about 35mph in stop and go traffic accelerating with a Throttle range of 25%-33% (scanguage used). I had to listen for it to notice it (no music and talking). On the way home from Long Island I didn't even notice it. Its a small price to pay for better throttle response. My "ac on" lag is gone. I do have a K&N stock size filter. I am happy with this mod. I feel it's well worth the time I took to get rid of the veins.
Mileage will be recalculated when I calibrate the scanguage again.

Aldive,
do you know if the 95-2001 4.0's had the "fins"? if so would this work for them. This would be better in my position then going out and buying a new TB.

yes they do, and yes it does. In fact I went a step further and polished my TB to a mirror finish. as well as port matched the spacer with the TB to decrease turbulence. Will this be better then aftermarket :dunno: not sure... but it sure is a lot cheaper.

Actually you don't want a mirror finish. It should be smooth, but a rough smoothness.

It has to do with flow and turbulence

Trucku, do you have any solid MPG gains data to throw at us?

has anybody confirmed if the throtlebody Aldive ran on his truck would work on our 02 SOHCs?

Here it is done. I used some compound to polish it the best I can inside..

I don't know much about the throttle body's on these Ex's, but I do remember reading something about there being some kind of "surface film" on the inside portion of the throttle body opening, that you must not remove by using some other cleaner other than a throttle body cleaning spray. By polishing the inside of the throttle body with the polishing compound you used, you may have removed this surface film. Something to check out.

I know this is an old thread but I'm having a problem seeing the pictures posted at the beginning. Any help would be much appreciated.

Pictures are not really necessary. If you take your throttle body off, you will notice a bunch of "fins" in the opening to smooth airflow. Use a dremel or similar tool to remove the fins and make a smooth circle.

Alright, thanks. It's dark here so I haven't had the chance to take a look at it. Will in the morning tho!

Seem to have lost my pics on photobucket...Sorry. Means all of my post with pics are buggered...oh joy.

Completed the mod. I have to say, I can feel a little bit of difference on take off and WOT. Not sure on milage but will get back on that to confirm.

KPPC,

when you say take off the throttle body, does that mean remove the whole thing from the engine or just removing the air intake hose from the mouth of it? I'm about to clean the throttle body on my Ex with cleaner soon and was wondering about this throttle body mod you guys are talking about. I noticed my Explorer with the 4.0L is a little sluggish taking off from a redlight and my MPG suck 10.2 MPG city or so. My Ex has been fully tuned up except the throttle body cleaning. Can you post up the instructions/tools needed for doing this throttle body mod and do you know if I have to disconnect the battery when I go to spray clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner? I don't think I need to, but I was wondering about the computer having to re-learn the difference in the throttle body after a cleaning. Thanks for any info you can supply on this!
