They are supposed to be for any engine; the idea is that they lengthen the inlet a bit, but they also have a helix or swirl effect which is supposed to speed up the air flow. Greater velocity of air is supposed to help the air mix with the fule better and yield more torque and power. Maybe because both the 5.4 and 4.6 run a 3" intake, it has more effect on the 5.4 but on the 4.6, the 3" intake is already optimal. Who knows? Whatever the case it doesn't seem to do much, but it doesn't hurt either, and if you get an anodised one, they look great, and we all know that's worth 10hp alone.
i had a tb spacer on my truck(4.6) and didnt see enough difference to keep it. just returned it and said i wasnt happy. from a stop you feel a little difference thats about it. but i am gonna look for a bigger tb soon. i was told it makes a huge difference but idk
