thud and jolt from rear when pulling from a stop

i get to a stop sign and then i start up i pressed the gas pedal probly half way down and i got going probly about 5mph and then there was this thud and jolt from the rear end, it has happend before. 97 xlt 4.0 ohv 4x4 65306k on the odomiter

Do you have limited slip rear? Check you axle code on the driver door sticker. It might be that.

May be time to replace your Ujoints. If you are driving along doing about 10 with it in 1st and hit the gas really hard and then let off immediatly and it jerks around really bad, then that is normally a sign the your Ujoints are bad. Good luck.

Has your Slip Yoke been lubed lately? If it hasn't it will do exactly what you describe.
