Thump in front tires

My 99 4 door explorer is experiencing a thumping noise in the front tires when i slow down. Also there is a burnt rubber smell. Not sure if the two are related.

Are the tires 'cupping'? That could be the thumping noise you're hearing. As for burnt rubber - ???

Probably a broken belt in one of your front tires - don't think it would be making a smell though. I'd have it checked soon though, cause if it is a broken belt I have found they have a tendance to progress pretty quickly.

Go have them checked immediately- TSTONE is right one of them could very well have a broken belt. This is not good at all..... the end result is catastrophic tire failure. Rollover or not, the tread flies off in such a violent manner as it often destroys/removes fenders.
