Thumpimg noise from left front.

Thumping noise from left front.

I have a thumping noise coming from left front , starts about 25 to 30 mph. , I have replace both rotors had lower ball joints also replaced and tire rotated , and the noise is still their.
My question is has any else had this problem ?
Any help would be great.
could it be the upper ball joint.

Tire Lubb, Wump, noise, slight vibration

Just bought a 00 X, believe its having the same issue. I'd say it sounds more like a lubb lubb lubb, or wubb wubb wubb that actually becomes loud enough to hear around 30, however i can faintly hear it at lower speeds. At above 40 it seems to even out though there is some vibration. I've been searching this board for a while, and have seen many different posts with many different solutions. The best advice i've found so far was to have someone stand outside and determine which wheel is making the sound, then diagonaly <SP?> rotating the tires. I've decided to put my fullsize spare on the front left (my believed source of the issue) and check it out. Some tires are 'loud' but these are wranger rts (i think its rt.. maybe r/s..omething like that? )

Other troubleshooting tips?
FYI the X has 58k miles, 2wd, no trail rash, no major accidents.
 






Probably radius arm bushings. They are a very common problem for X's. There are a lot of posts on this board about how to fix them. They speak about grinding rivets, and there is the Haynes book version of disassembling the front suspension.

Be aware that what you read here is only an individual's experience. Some folks have mechanic experience, some only quote what the have interpreted here.

Be aware that the Haynes books are general repair procedures and may not apply, although illustrated, for the specific vehicle they are written for. I have a 92 4WD X. I chose the Haynes disassembly process. I found it was not possible to move the axel forward to pull the radius arm out of the crossmember.

I know that I get a good bumping sound, noticed the lower balljoint was shot, replaced it. Shop told me my upper was gone, so I replaced that. Still got the bumping and slightly wild steering at times. Then came to noticed that my swaybar endlinks were gone. Still haven't replaced them yet, but definately think this will be the solution to my problem.

As far as I know, the 2nd gens did not have radius arms, and thus there are no bushings to replace.
 






I had the lub, lub, lub noise over the summer. My tire was shot from not getting an alignment after last winter. I got an alignment, which required camber shims, and the lub, lub, went away. Not sure if my noise was exactly what you have but is it possible that your tire is just running ****-eyed on the road and causing the noise?

I guess If I keep my radio down I can get away with this until I get a new SUV. But does anyone know if this is not checked out.. will it cause serious problems or make my explorer to the texas flip? :roll: I'm getting new tires and struts soon. I guess I'll also have them check the camber shims. Thanks guys. :D
 






Well, like I said my front drivers side tire was pretty well chopped up, I had them switch my spare for it. But I don't think it'll cause you to flip or anything. I'm not an expert on the whole camber/alignment issue, all I know is it cost a pretty penny to get an alignment and shims.
If you are getting new tires, and shocks, then you might as well bite the bullet then and have that shop mount them for you, but thats just me, I'd rather pay everything at once then have to be nickle and dimed to death.
