I just tore apart the front end on my 97 ranger. I noticed the axle housing was wallowed out from lack of diff fluid I guess. The spider gears were in good shape but you could move the driver side up and down ( a lot of play between the spider gear and where it goes into the housing).
My question is would this make the thumping sound when in 4wD? I am guessing it would. The driver side hub is bad too so I am waiting to try on on a new hub before I replace the axle housing. Anybody know how much I should expect to pay for a front axle housing unit or where to get one? I'm in VA. Thanks in advance.
I also had a leak on the front differential beam housing cover when I put it back together. What a crappy design with having to drop most of the front end and remove the coil spring just to access the front diff!
