I was wondering if anyone had similar problem with their ex making a very faint tick/rattle during acceleration.it sounds like it is comeing from the front left wheel well so i thought it was a hub but i was told it might be a exaust leak or engine knock.the truck runs pretty good so i am not sure as to what it may be.

I'm not sure, but if your Ex has the 4.0 SOHC do a search for timing chain rattle. If it matches this, then everyone has had this rattle. You are not alone.

i dunno about your year but the first gen pushrod engine has problems with the lifters. probly not your problem but who knows?

what would be the easiest way to check for exaust leaks the sound is very faint only appears when tach goes past 2500.it is a 1998 ford explorer xlt with 236000 km i have also noticed at low speed the turning left it makes a kinda rumble sound.

i dont know what the rumble sound would be, possibly something with a CV joint up front or other problem in the awd system (if its awd that is)

to check for an exhaust leak, try taking a piece of hose about 3 feet long and put one end to your ear, move the other end around the engine compartment (especially along the exhaust manifolds and exhaust fittings etc) use it like a stethascope to find you're problem. it works very well. it's a good way to find the problem no matter what it is.

by the way, if it's a timing chain, i think you would hear the noise any time you're rpm was in the "noise area" even just revving the engine up in park. (timing chain load does not change under engine output load)

thanks for the helpful tips it is awd. I will try the hose trick in the morning

according to the other thread, sea foaming is the easiest way to check for exhaust leak ....

I am kidding...dont check that way

236k is a lot of miles, I would say start with the simple stuff exhaust leak (fix leak), carbon buildup (clean with seafoam) and then move onto the other more costly stuff. Lifters, Timing chain, bearings etc....
