Hi everyone again.......

Ok. Here We Go Again. I had to take my sister to a garage in middletown, as I sat in the parking lot idling I heard this loud ticking noise. When I say loud I mean LOUD. I revved the engine and it went away. About 15 minutes later it came back. I don't notice it when I'm driving. The noise sounds like it's coming from one of the belts in the front. Seeing as I have a minimum of knowledge about this engine I'm just guessing. Is this the cam chain tensioner i've been hearing about? That and what the hell can I do about the shuddering i'm feeling and seeing when I idle? Could it be some deposits on the plugs?

Help!

i have a broken coil output and it allows the plug wire to pop of the tower under accel or vibration. thus the loud ticking i hear isnt a tick but me running on 5 cylinders and 1 spark trying to arc.

Well, jimabena if it's not running on all 6 cylinders then why does the noise vanish when I rev the engine? then kick back up after a few minutes? I'm just trying to figure this out so I don't have to waste my time taking it to Ford and let them jerk me around for a few days....

Thanks

Okay, my Explorer does the same thing as yours. It only runs on 5 out of the 6... Now what does it take to fix?
Thanks

Damn good question Superman!

All I need is an answer that a mechanically un-inclined person can do himself in his driveway!

Anyone? Anyone?

See, my real problem is this. I've always known what it was, and I've wanted to fix it for about 6 months, but I can't get anyone to give me an answer without telling me about half a billion things to do along with it. All I want is what it will take to make all 6 run. I wish SOMEONE would just be honest about junk like this for a change. I had one guy try to talk me into a valve job because of this!! If ANYONE knows what I can do to fix this 5 outa 6 junk, please tell me quick. Thanks

Hell Yeah !

Tell Me To!!!!

ok mine is just that the wire come disconnected from the coil pack..the sound doesnt go away...it just appears that way because of the higher revs. i just reconnect it again.

It sounds like there maybe two different problems here. With the info here it sounds like both maybe simple.

Wargoast....It does sound like yours is maybe the Cam Chain. Have you had it fixed?? You may as well. It free from ford, so why not give it a shot. If this fixes the problem GREAT. If not it's one less thing you'd have to spend money on.

superman5787...Let me see if I understand your problem. For some reason your truck only runs of 5 cylinders rather than 6?? If that's the case you may have a bad plug or wire somewhere. When was the last time you had them changed?? The coil also could be bad, but the coil Ford puts out are VERY good. This was the first time I've heard of a problem with the coils from the factory. Start by checking the plugs and wires. If that doesn't work.....try the coil. If that doesn't work.....Try a shop.

leebo, the problem i have with mine isnt a bad coil. it is that the connection point from the wire to the coil. the top plastic part of the coil that connects to the wire snapped off.this allows the wire to pop out of its hole occassionally..probably from intense vibration that my truck has been through...accidents, wheeling etc

I might know what the ticking is. It is the belt tensioner or cam tensioner . It is on the passenger side of the truck. 2001ExpSport's truck did the same thing for a while, but after going wheelin one day with me we stopped and we finally figured out where it was coming from. It is the lower passenger tensioner. It wasn't even on my truck and it was driving me insane!

Ok RichSport94 ,
Do I just print out the TSB about the Cam Chain Tensioner and hand it to the shop tech at ford and it'll get done right? Umm, where can I get the whole TSB about that?
Thanks A TON everyone! I love my X but this shtuff pisses me off! Keep this thread going, some of us may learn something else.

- Then you DO have a problem with the coil. You'll need to replace it if there is a part broken off. Its not a replaceable part(the item thats broken on yours) thus the need to replace the entire coil pack.

i know eventually i will
i just need to upgrade to a jacods ignition...hehehe :)

ok... does anyone know the procedure for getting the TSB and then getting the dealership to repair the cam tensioner? possibly the lower intake manifold gasket too?

WarGoast.......just take it into Ford. They may not be able to fix it then, but you can set up a time to get them done.

Jim......You do have a problem. Just get a stock coil. The Jacobs aren't worth the money unless you've done a ton of mods(at least that's what I've heard). The stock coil will work fine for your needs. Just make sure there's no metal around once the wire comes off the coil. :)

how much is a new coil pack? should i email torrie@fpn?

i am probably going to wait though...other stuff needs to get fixed first.....

ok.. one more question that i've asked before but since some of you have Sports I'll ask it again... When I let the truck idle it shakes... I can actually see the engine shake and feel it, even in the truck... could it be deposits on the plugs? gimme some ideas so I can try some stuff. Oh and does anyone know of any good books I can pick up on repairing and maintaining my truck ( i know, lame question but I figure if I can break down a computer in under 4 minutes and rebuild one in 3 then I figure this can't be that much more difficult... Don't correct me if I'm wrong :) )

Is the cam thing a recall?

Will they do it for any explorer? I have a 91 with its ticks and pops.........Myabe this will help. Robbiw

WarGhost,
Mine does the EXACT same thing. They are telling us two different solutions and we have the same problem. Hang with me. I just got my coils replace, plugs, and wires. Fixed it. Your's isn't running on all 6 cylinders either bud... That's why it's shaking. Only 5 are firing. Just get a new coil, plugs, and wires like I did, and I promise it will fix it. Tell me how it goes.
