i got a 98 X and was wondering how the hell i would intsall the ball hitch to the bumper. I am only towing kyaks (can't spell, i know) so i am not worried about the weight factor. the most detailed replies would be great. pictures of one already installed would help even more. thanks folks.:)

Doesn't your bumper have a little pop out piece of plastic that is covering the hole for the ball hitch? Maybe they did away with that when the moved the plate to the hatch. If you have the hole, you just pop out the plastic and stick the ball in there and tighten it up. If you don't have a hole you will either need to have one drilled or get a reciever style hitch.

mines got a strange nut on it. go to a ford dealer and ask them to take it out for ya then go to an auto parts place and buy a tow ball. the wiring bit for the trailor im nor sure of but im sure some one will add thier 2 cents when they get up

A lot of explorers come pre wired. If you get under the bumper and looks up into the bootom of the truck you might find your harness.

Mine has a wire harness underneath as well.

...so that's for trailers, eh? (never knew that):)

Mine has a ball on the bumper and a wiring harness. Looks like the harness was an aftermarket add-on, but the bumper is stock.

I have the plug for the wiring harness, but i can't find the part that plugs into it, and then into the trailor. Where can the be aquired(sp?)?

Mine had the wiring harness inside the jack compartment at the back of the truck..

My old 94 Ex had the wiring harness in the jack compartment as well. It was a pain to have to pull it out everytime you wanted to tow something. I much prefer a bumper mounter or hitch mounted harness.

I'm confused as to what your asking. Do you want to know how to hook up the actual ball or the wiring? The ball should be pretty self explanitory and the wiring will should be in the rear on the driverside under the truck. It is a connector with a white cap on the end of it. Should be the only connector not connected to anything.

Hope this helps
Randy
