I have owned my explorer for a little over a month now..I have always been a ford guy but never really cared for explorers. But i was forced into buying a new vehicle when my 93 f-150 craped all over itself and by that i mean rusted out to the point the fixing it would cost more than double what it was worth. I had a week before the inspection ran out on the truck so i bought the explorer for 1800 because the tranny was brand new and the motor ran amazingly well for the amount of miles (167,000).

I wanted to make it an off road rig...however with the lack of off road parts available for these trucks i decided making it a sporty street truck is probably the better way to go.

My questions are what are some good engine upgrades to start off with for a 96 xlt 4wd with a 4.0 ohv in it...I keep seeing people righting something about pulleys...not sure what that is. I'll do an exhaust but nothing loud since i'm not a fan of the v6 sound...basically what's the biggest bang for you buck...obviously i'll rebuilt the motor before i do any crazy work to it because of the high milage

Thanks for any help

There are many, many offroad parts available for the Explorer... All sorts of lifts/upgrades are out there. But if you now want a street truck thats a whole 'nother question.

The OHV isn't exactly a powerhouse. It has about 160 HP stock so even if you squeeze another 50 HP out of it youre still only at 200 for a pretty heavy truck. The pulleys people are referring to are most likely underdrive crankshaft pulley in conjunction with other underdrive/overdrive pulleys for other accessories designed to free up HP that is eaten by the drag caused from the belt.

As for biggest bang for your buck, someone else can chime in as I don't know for that motor.
