Hey everyone,
I was driving my 2008 Ford Explorer yesterday when, out of nowhere, a loud and irregular noise started coming from the engine bay. No warning lights, no performance issues leading up to it—just a sudden harsh mechanical sound.
From the tone and rhythm of it, I’m thinking it might be a timing chain or tensioner issue (I know the '08 Explorer uses a chain, not a belt), but I’m not 100% sure. I'd really appreciate any thoughts from folks who’ve dealt with something similar.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:
Any insight on whether this sounds like timing chain-related failure or something else entirely would be super helpful. Also curious if anyone has experience with timing chain rattle or guide failure on the 4.0L SOHC engine.

Here’s what I’ve noticed:
- The noise is consistent and sounds like it’s coming from the front/top of the engine
- No loss of power when the sound started
- No oil light or check engine light
- I’ve attached a video so you can hear it for yourself
