timing chain fix

knock sensor

I plan to purchase my knock sensor from Rock Auto. My original has given me fits by retarding the timing during WOT even with the highest grade fuel I can purchase at the pump. Rock Auto has one (Airtex/Wells) with a connector similar to mine. For some reason the one shown for your 98 is different (much more expensive) than the one for my 2000. The only mechanical difference in the two engines that I'm aware of is the variable intake system on the 97 and some 98 models. I'm going to try it and record the knock sensor retard with my SCT X3 PowerFlash/laptop to see if it's working properly. The Ford PN is XL3Z12A699BA.

Do you have the SOHC V6 installation instructions? I can't remember who I have e-mailed them to. There are several important things to do when re-installing the upper pan. If you (or anyone else) need the instructions just PM me your e-mail address and I'll send them.

Tasca will provide you with the improved primary tensioner. The old style is no longer available. The rear cassette does not include the jackshaft rear sprocket retaining bolt or the plug.

I have a bunch of those files in PDF form. The public server I had them on is no longer. :(

I do have a new FTP server set up at home. I will make the public domain files available. Give me a couple days to set it up and post the link for download.

I found the knock sensor and coolant temp sensor on Rock Auto but whith those and the front timing seal and thermostat housing seals it was $53.70.
Whitch is fine but the shipping put it way to high ($84.72) so i might just try napa or advance and see what they have.

EDIT......I got it down to $78.32 whith shipping on Rock Auto so im just going to order them from there.I did find it on tasca but whithout the coolant sensor it was $70.00 whith shipping so it was still cheaper through Rock Auto.I wasnt able to find the jackshaft bolt on Rock Auto so im going get it from the local dealer.

Still waiting on parts so started to clean the valley of the engine and painting the block.

Looking for a second opinion here. I installed new balance shaft guide and tensioner last night well tonight i removed the pin keeping the tension off and it really didnt make a difference chain is still loose.I know that cant be normal and my chain is probably streched just wanted a second opinon before i put this project back another week because of parts.

Slack in balance shaft chain whith new tensioner/guide.

Besides the set back above the new rear cassate , primary Guide/tensioner and balance shaft guide/tensioner have been installed and some more progress on cleaning and painting engine.Still waiting on new rear jackshaft bolt , knock sensor ,coolant sensor and front main seal. But looks like now i might have to order new balance shaft chain also.

defective tensioner?

Even if the chain has stretched I think the tensioner should take up the slack. I suspect that you have a defective tensioner. Did the movable guide surface that contacts the chain spring outward when the pin was pulled? Maybe it's just stuck. Try prying on it a little. Below is a photo that Janolsson posted in the past.

It did deflect outwards but never firmly contacted the chain if you look at the pics above the curveature seems correct aswell. You have made a great sugggestion at may be the springs are just caght. im going to go out now and wiggle it a little and see if it extends some.

thanks,

Just went out and worked the tensioner up and down.Alot of the movement is coming from the balance shaft gear thats on the crank it seems to wiggle around a little since the balancer isnt on.I can rotate the balance shaft gear (on the balance shaft) back and forth about a 1/8 of a inch.Chain is only loose when you rotate the balance shaft gear clockwise. When you rotate the gear counter clockwise it takes up the slack. So maybe its fine im just being to technical?

Looking for the balance shaft chain and gears part#s.

thanks

knock sensor mounting

The photo below posted by another member shows the knock sensor.

It looks like the sensor wire is pointed toward the driver side head and routed forward under the fuel injector wiring harness. It then turns to the passenger side in front of the fuel rail and raises up to the connector.

Im still a little confused myself but havnt been working on the engine in a few days decided to walk out tonight and clean a few things. I wiggled the balance shaft gear one last time before i ordered the new parts and the slack is completly gone. I guess the tensioner springs must have been cought on one another some how maybe oil im not sure but its been hot the last few days so maybe the heat contributed but the balance shaft assembely is good and tight now.I havnt touched this engine for days or did the engine rotate because crank holding tool is still on so im not really sure but keep a eye out on sticking new tensioners

Good job! I wonder how long an Explorer can go with the chain rattle syndrome? Mine, unless it's the torque converter, has gone five years with a rattle. Part of me wonders if it's the valves because surely the timing chain would get worse.

Oh and you can tell by now I would NEVER have the ability to yank the engine and fix the timing belt in a million years.

Thanks, Not really sure how long they can go i guess until the chain slips, breaks or peices of guides/tensioners clog oil pump pickup tube and starve the engine of oil thats what scared me the most.

Well decided to retime balance shaft today and was surprised that it was 1 and 1/2 turns out of time.I assume since the balance shaft tensioner broke it slacked the chain enough to slip.

does the sohc run without balance shaft chain? my engine is making a noise in the balance shaft area, not knocking just like something loose , I suspect the tensioner or guide may be defective. so I asked that because I dont want to expend time lifting the engine to remove the oil pan . please help and thanks a lot !!!
