2001 Explorer Sport
Hey guys, I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 6-cyl with 84,000 miles on it. I am getting a loud clicking from under the hood and the mechanic down the street said it was the timing chains. He explained what all was going to be involved in fixing it and said it was going to run at least $1000 to fix. Does this seem about right to you all? Thanks for any information.

There are two V6 4.0 engines. The OHV version shouldn't cost that much. The SOHC engine needs the front two cam chain cassettes changed. The 2002+ models got better parts, and are used in the older engines.
I will be pulling apart the front of my 99 soon. The cassettes are just over $60 each for me at Ford. If yours is the SOHC, do get the check valve for the tensioner also. It keeps oil pressure in the tensioner when the engine is off. LOL,
Don
