For Ford rear ends with factory limited slip.

I read and read the instructions, but could not figure out how to get the spider gears to come out since all it says is "remove the spider gears and their thrust washers". I called Powertrax and got the answer.

With the pinion shaft, C-clips and clutch spring out, push the axle ends back in to engage the side gears. Put the transmission in park, then rotate both tires in the same direction. This rotates the case until the spider gears fall out.

Additionally, there are two very thin washers (thrust washers) after the clutch plates, that are hard to see, and need to come out.

These were the only two snags in the install. Otherwise it went as smooth as promised in the paperwork.

Brian,
So you ended up with the powertrax right? I've been wanting to put in a full locker in the rear. How was the install?

It went pretty smooth, just like the instructions said. It took about two hours for the R and R. I've been driving it all over to check it out. When I took the first test drive, it made all kinds of clanking and binding noises. I called Powertrax and they said thats normal. It has totally smoothed out after about 60miles. You only notice it when accelerating hard on a curve, or pulling out of driveways. Every so often it clunks to let you know its a real locker, but its kind of cool. If you are getting one, call Pro-Gear in San Diego. They got me one for $355.62 + tax ($385.00).

Hey Brian,
What was the part number and would this same one fit the my 97 explorer sport? Do you have a person name i can mention when i call to give me the same deal? Also, when i get it I was wondering if you would be able to help me install mine. I have never dealt with this stuff before.

The part numbers for Powertrax No-Slip:
1991-2001 Ford Explorers
Limited Slip: 92-0688-3128
Open: 92-0688-3108

You should not have any problems with the install, if you have basic wrench skills. Just take it slow and easy. If you have any problems, its because you missed a step or left something in that should have come out. Powertrax has good tech support, or if you get it through Pro Gear, you can call Mark (858) 571-1158. He was very helpfull.
