So I am new to having a explorer. I have a 97 xlt that needs new tires. I am trying to get new tires for as cheap as I can. I was looking on the discount tire website for tire prices. When i put in the vehicle information it just gave me a message to see a store for assistance because tire selection for this vehicle required special attention. I understand that there has been issues with tires on these vehicles, but my understanding is that it was a problem with firestone and how the tires were pressurized. Is it safe to use any tire that is the proper size under normal driving conditions?

I just bought new tires on my 96 XLT. 235-75-15, Goodyear Wranglers $70/tire at Wal-Mart.

How much did you pay total?

Just over $300 due to them adding $40 in roadhazard protection. Just let them know you don't want the extra stuff. And they'll also try to get you buy adding new stem caps ($2/per stem). So just tell them you don't want the extras, and your total will be around $290.

Goto your local Discount Tire and see what selections they have. Not all they have available are listed online.

Pepboys and Peerless Tyre, if they are in your area, are other options.

Maybe watch Craigslist for some slightly used options. I have ran across some killer prices on 235-75-15...

I just bought a set of General Grabbers in size 255/70R16 for my '96 EB for $114 each plus mounting and balancing and tax with free lifetime rotation at a local Ford dealer of all places. The local discount tire places couldn't compete with that price. I've been hearing that dealers are getting more competitve with tire prices but didn't believe it until now.

Discount tire here in Mankato MN was $400 for 4 new 235/75/15 Yokohama's mounted and balanced and he gave me $40 for the almost new front tires, lifetime balance and rotate included. With tax $367.Had to do all 4 as I have AWD.:D
