So ive ordered a set of 305/70/16s for the ST and it just dawned on me after the fact that I have no idea if they will even fit on my 16x8 rims.
Anyone have any input on weather it will be safe to ride a tire that wide on an 8" rim? I'll eventually go to a 16x10, but for now i need to know if i'll even be able to mount them.

8" will be fine. 10" and i've heard that you might have difficulty getting the bead to seat?

EDIT: come to think of it.... i run a 245(9.6"wide) on a 9" rim so you should have no problem mounting a 305(12"wide) on a 10" rim

Stick with the 8" rim, the factory wheels are only 7". I had 285/75/16's on the factory wheels and I know other members that ran the 305's on the factory's too.

I downsized the rim to a 15x8 Cragar Soft 8 with 4" backspacing, mounted 33x12.50x15 DuraTrac's on them and don't have any issue.

Here's a picture of my Trac with the 285's on the stockers and with 1.5" wheelsapcers and now with the Cragar's with 33x12.50's...

Cool, I'm ordering the same size tires tomorrow. I'm going with Cooper Discoverer STT's. They have very good reviews. Can't wait to have them on my truck. Oh and I also have 16x8 wheels also which is a good size wheel for that size tire.

I ran used 285/70r17s cooper discoverer stts on my truck and they had below average performance in the rain

I would expect below average for a mud tire but from what reviews say they seem to do better then BFGs which is what I was going to get. They have to be better then the Dekota Definitety ATs I have now which are miserable in the rain.

Did you find that they were worse then other mud tires?

Those are the only mud tires I have had, but I've great things about the wrangler duratrac. I now run my old hankook dynapro atm rf10s and they handle great in rain and snow, and they were okay in mud, they just don't clean the mud out from the grooves that well

i run 12.50 duratracs on my 8" wide wheels just like rebel and its all good so you should be good with your new treads in terms of them fitting. btw, ive only had my duratracs for a bit, but they stuck like glue to the road during our first rain storms, and they are awesome off road as well with not as much road noise as my pro comp mud tires (thought the pro comps were damn good in the dirt).

A 305/70-16 is the same overall size as a 33x12.50-15, either will fit on an 8" or 10" wheel. That being said, the late-model Ranger/Explorer front end isn't real happy with wheels wider than 8" or tires taller than 33". If you go bigger keep an eye on the wheel bearings, ball joints, and tie rod ends.

A guy working for a Good Year shop down here told me that if I like to tear it up every so often out wheeling then the Duratrac wasn't a good choice and that I should go with the Coopers even though he couldn't get them for me. Not sure why that is though I didn't ask him for more detail on that, I just took him at his word since I was at an actual Good Year shop.

Thanks guys, the tires should be in tomorrow so hopefully i'll have some glamour shots to show off soon.

Oh, and FWIW the tires i'm going with ar Pro-Comp XTerrains (they were on sale, buy 3 get one free) so they came out cheaper than my BFG A/Ts. And i've got a set of black steelies that I'll be mounting them to (that are actually 16x8, funny i never realized the factory ST wheels were only 7" wide).

Every day I'm inching closer to being "done" with this truck! :P

I doubt he has actually run them then. I run around with a bunch of heeps, one guy runs mickey thompson baja mt's and another runs procomp mt's and Im usually the one circling back to drag them out.
