Well I put it off as long as I could (even replaced the rear with some junkyard tires to last us the summer). Now the fall/winter is coming though and it's time to get 4 new tires. The treadwear on our Goodyear Wranglers (came with the truck) in the front was excellent and if it was March I'd keep them a bit longer even.

Anyway, I've looked at the comments on tirerack and I've read the threads here. Kumho seems to make a pretty good tire but I was hoping maybe a few more people would have some feedback on them or an alternative even. I would have liked to get a dedicated winter tire but it's cost prohibitive atm so I guess I'm going all-season. Whatever happened to the all-season tires with at least a mildly agressive pattern?

We live a rural area and it gets nasty when it snows but considering it only snowed 3-4 days last year, I was just hoping for a solid all-season that would also get us to-from work on those snowy days. We do about 30K a year on the truck so treadwear is important also. So do we go with the cheap Kumhos or is there something better someone would recommend?

I was just in your similar situation. I drive a 2000 Gold 5.0 AWD Explorer. I opted to save my money and go with the Wrangler Silent Armors ,cant comment yet as they had to order my size. But I can tell these tires are the real deal. Aggressive Tread design, has Kevlar technology, good street ratings, and quiet. If you would like to keep going with Goodyear like I have I'd suggest them or maybe even the Fortera Silent Armors. But you may not be interested in a A/T tire like I was... Good luck with your such keep ev everyone informed.

Thanks for the quick reply Tek. Well you got me thinking ... maybe I will go for an A/T tire. As I said it hasn't snowed much here in recent years, but when it does it gets treacherous. One slip doesn't send you into a parked car - it sends you over a cliff.

About 5 years ago I had a '92 Explorer XLT and 4WD crapped out on me. Going down a steep hill doing only 15mph I hit the edge of the embankment and rolled right down the ravine. (on a side note, the damn thing still ran once they used to winch to drag it up, but I had to sell it for parts as the roof was crushed in).

Anyway, that's why I went for AWD this time around and it's also why I want a damn good tire on my SUV.

might as well plus Car/Highway tires look ugly as hell on the Explorer Gens 1&2. Gotta go with the Light truck tires for performance and looks!
