Hey guys, I bought 31x10.5 BFG All Terrains new from Sears a year ago from last Nov. So they've been on my rig for a year and a few months. They probably have a good 15,000 mil eson them, driving across the country and back this summer too. I have been known to do the occasional donut or two during a snow storm and do some light off-roading. However, I had some higway shakes about a month ago and I thought it would be my alightment or something. But I have a friend that works at sears and I get free wheel balancing anyway, so I went there.

He took off the tires and started to balance them, a few very really off balance, however, even on the tire rotation/balancing machine, they wobbled. He re-adjusted them several times, and it wasn't the rim. The actual tires of my Explorer (2 VERY noticable, and 2 slightly) were actually warped and would wobble back and forth when spinning on the balancing machine.

Has anyone heard of this? I Could have had two tires warrantied and received new ones there, but I didn't want to put new tires on with my AWD system comapred to the 2 older ones that had sme tread worn off. I just thought it was insane that my tires were warped and that wobbly on a machine....VERY noticable.

But the balancing did get rid of most of the highway shakes, so that is good, it is only slightly there, but of course that is the tire itself!

i would have gotten the new tires...the diffrence would have been so marginally small that nothing would go wrong with the awd

this is also why you are supposed to go in and get your tires rotated and ballanced every 6k miles

I probably put 12k on it before I had them rotated 2 months ago, but there was no uneven wear on the tires. I might go back and get two new ones if I can, I'll ask my friend. I just like the idea of having them all worn about the same, especially with the AWD system. But it would be nice to have 2 new ones. ;)

when my buddy and i were balancing my Kumhos at the school something like this happened. Actually 3 out of 4 tires balanced awsomely, didnt even have to use weights on 1 wheel. The 4th was 28lbs outta balance! warped fur shur. i called Tire Rack and they advanced me a new one.

Usually when they are smelting these things togeather, they might lay a little too much patch on one side or something.

It is usually refered to as a "****ed in the mold" defect, and should have been caught at the factory. They arent really "warped".... the runout spec is way off. This would have been noticable when they were first mounted on your wheels. Over time, they get worse. You need new ones, as your old ones should be covered under some type of warranty or at least pro-rated on a set of new ones.

I talked to my friend at Sears who got me the tires originally (for a discount) and he is going to talk to the manager that sold me the tires. Hopefull yhe can get me 2 free and a discount on 2 more maybe. But if any of you have a good explaination that I could print out or reasons why I could get new tires sinc eI can get some discounted or warrantied, that would be great. I know that the warping is getting a little worse and throwing the balancing off, so hopefully I can get new tires out of this! :D :burnout:

Anyone have any other ideas or info? MY friend at sears also has told me he highly recommends michellin tires now, AT's are good, but he has michellin's always perform well and balance/wear well when he sees them in the shop. Anyone have any comments?

they usually won't warrant the tires unless you have had regular alignments and rotations.

unless they is a way to prove for sure that the tires have factory defects don't expect to get free replacments....you may still be able to get a sum of money for having them pro-rated

Michelin's are ok but IMO they cost way to damn much. they were really well but traction sucks (I've heard from owners), kinda like the General tires.

the Michelin sidewalls are really weird, they don't like to come off the rim freely, usually they will rip unless you take it slow with the tire machine and use lots of lubrication (not trying to be sick)

You could have bent rims also. I'd find a Hunter GSP9700 Balancer:

That machine can tell you if the rim is bent, or if the tires are out of round.

It's possible, but we really looked at the wheels spinning, the rim showed no or minimal movement while the wheels were on the balancing machine, however, the tires themselves were wobbling every which way in certain areas. He re-adjusted them and tried it again, it is definately the tire that is warped. So hopefully Ican get 2 free and maybe 2 more pro-rated. I was offered 2 free on the spot but didn't doit, now I want to, haha.

Maybe the reason they are warped a bit it becuase of what I do in the "Fun in the snow" Link in my signature. :D

Cool video. You didnt warp your tires..... you cant warp a tire after its been cured out. Its been bad all along, its just probably gotten more noticable as they've worn. Also, it could be a slipped belt which would mean they need to come off NOW as the end result to a slipped belt is the tread/belts flying off on interstate and you flipping across the median at 75mph and hitting a busload of nuns. Its either a ****ed in the mold defect or a slipped belt.
