ok I have torn down the top end of my explorer and theres only "X" number of bolts left before i take the intake manifold off. i know i am going to replace the top end gaskets but also i wanted to replace lifters and springs and put a cam in there while i am at it. possibly even headers. On the camshaft I am pretty sure what the difference is when they mention the operating RPMs. this is where i will notice the performance or is this were i will have to raise my idle to? with the stock setup idle is at 550-600 rpms.

any opionins on the items listed below would be a great help! thanks!

I've found headers made by headman on summitracing.com for about $222.69 the lifters are about 35.99 each and then the camshaft is $245.99

links at the bottom for everything listed in this post.

Skip the headers, unless you are having your heads ported and your lower intake knife'edged around the injector bosses, they will just cause more headaches then what they are worth (Sealing issues, problems with getting underhood temps too hot)

The cam will still idle in the same range as stock ~750... which is what the computer sets it to run at. I have the 422 cam, Comp cams advertises this to idle @1200. The engine still idles 750, i guess 1200 is just where it aint so loopy. You will notice a power increase ALL across the board, but mainly where comp-cams advertises the raise in RPM range.

Since you are going to be replacing the lifters, you might aswell plan on having your heads rebuilt. You cannot remove the lifters without removing the heads anyway. New valve guides/seals, springs/retainers. Have them milled, and hot bathed. It probably will cost ~$400. I would do this esspecially if you are getting the new cam.

If you just want to bring the life back into your 4.0. I would remove the heads, clean the **** out of the pistons and the rest of the combustion chambers with laqur. Also clean the intake runners and manifold. Replace head gaskets (Felpro is fine), new valve springs, new pushrods and rockerarms from delta-cams, replace lower intake gasket (FORD! Felpro will work, but may cause issues), injector o-rings. upper intake gaskets, and make sure to use FORD valve cover gaskets or the Felpro PERMA-DRY gaskets. The regular Cork from felpro is known to leak.

But again if you wanna go as far as a new cam and lifters, you might aswell spend the extra ~200 and replace the bearings and rings, timing set. But then you might aswell balance the rotating assembly and have the cylinders bored. Its a huge mess when it gets down to it. Not for the faint of heart.

thanks for that opinion! definitly things to consider! i would love to bring the life back to my explorer! i mean before i tore it down i could burn rubber in it! sure the ground was a little wet. but to see it move was great. check out the video below of my 1994 explorer xlt. the link is there.
