Ok, as we all know, Explorers are good from 0 to about 40....after that the partial feeling of gravity pushing you back into your seat dies down. This is not so in my dad's V6 Volkswagen Passat. Thing is, I don't have the money to purchase and custom fit a turbo to my truck's engine. What else can be done? I have already gotten rid of the spare tire and pretty much anything else that can be torn out for a total lightening of about 100lbs. This helped a little, but the truck is still slow on the top. I am ordering a Superchip within the next week, and hopefully that will help. But, what else can be done? Must have that quarter-mile speed up a little. Also, NoS is not an option for me, so anything else other than a turbo and Nos that can be done so that I will have better high end speed would be a useful suggestion. Thanks guys.

Sean

you could change the gears for more top end... or qtr mile speeds...

Well first off, if you're going for serious speed it's really best to start with a 2 wheel drive Explorer because as i am sure you know, the 2WD's are lighter weight. Also you will need to lower the truck at least a little or else you will be in danger above about 100 mph.

Then get some slightly larger rims, like 16's or 17's, and appropriate performance tires to match. For gears you probably want 3.27, 3.55, or 3.08;

After doing all the bolt-on mods, short of nitrous your best bet for speed would be a supercharger, although it's expensive (approx $3000) to do that.

Is your 4l a SOHC or the OHV version?

He has a 1995 Explorer, so it has to be the OHV motor.

That's good because the OHV has a better array of aftermarket parts than the SOHC's do.
