Has anybody changed the chip in their Explorer and seen how fast it will go. Mine's an automatic, but it will run 50mph in first gear, 80mph in 2nd gear, the shuts off at 108mph. But since I got the 30's on it I will assume that it's 5mph off at 108mph, so it's actually running 113mph. I have the high gear rear-end. But my tire are Q-rated(112mph).

My dad hates the Dueler A/T, he said that they are too loud and they ride rough. So I thought About getting some low-profile tires, I think they were the bridgestone potenza with a Z-rating(148mph+). 205/55/15 i think. down here they are $125 a tire. I love going around curves fast. so those tires will work.

how fast will this thing go without the cut-off chip.

hehe...the most i've gotten mine up to is 95 ;)

I don't know how fast this is, but I've gotten my speedo needle to point at the "OD" marker on the tranny selector display. And that was running totally stock. :D

I would say about 140mph, but yours doesnt have a speed limiter in it. Also what gear rear-end do you have. My brothers 91Eb has trouble getting past 100mph, I can smoke him on the interstate. He has a 3.73 rear-end.

I don't think the OD indicator is 140mph... We have had it show OD a bunch of times when the speedo was reading low (30" tires.. 3.27 gears)... The govoner would kick in just after we hit the OD.

I have a 1992 Kawasaki zx-6 which will easily make 140mph (clocked at over 140 at the track many times) and I know that in the explorer when it is maxed out (hitting the limiter.. which is just past OD) we are not at 140. Judging by how the scenery is going by (road stripes etc). I'd say we were just over 100.. maybe 105-110.. but not 140. There is a big difference in how 140 looks compared to 110.

Of course nowadays.. OD is only 85mph or a hair above.. (speedo is 18% off)..

Sorry, I was looking at the Kmph which said 120 instead of the bearly visible 85mph. Mine will run 113mph stock. Because of the bigger tires I would say that at about 105mph the speedometer is 5mph off. Therefore, when the trucks shuts off at 108mph going by the speedo, I am actually going 113mph. At 70mph I am actually going73 mph. And at 50mph I am going 57mph.

I've seen 140mph and it looks different than 110mph that's for sure, you ought to try 160mph. Now thats fun especially down the interstate(I-75). We were clocked my a Georgia State Patrol going 160mph on the ineterstate a few years ago. It was a GSP Mustang and he was on our bumper at 160mph! So we pulled over. We like to borrow my moms mustang every once and a while to see what 160mph looks like.

I was looking at your picture... and it looks to me that your going around 0. Your probably not moving... have you tried turning the car on? Then you need to move the stick on the right... so the little yellow thing points to "D" or "OD".... and then you press the pedel on the right. That should help get somwhere above the "zero" mark. Hope that helps!

James,

How much was the ticket for going 160!? At that speed in Texas, the cops do a felony stop. They throw you to the ground and everything. I've heard it hurts. Ouch!

You know what? You all are idiots... go to a racetrack to f&^k around with others lives...not on the interstate.. it's nothing to be proud of. Apparently you don't care about your own lives... but others that have to drive on the road with you? If I were the cop I'd find something....anything to take away that ticket to ride..(your license)...same as driving drunk... I mean cripes I can understand going like 10-15 miles over the speed limit but sheesh 160? I hope you don't have to learn the hard way..(hhmmm like vehicular homicide..) about that...

Yeah, 160 is just plain stupid. You really cant respond to anything at that speed and could end up killing someone.

It wasn't me, it was my brother, you know how teenagers are, he was very inmature for his age. He got at least 3 tickets a week. He's now 27 and he just now learned to pay his bills on time and not 3 months after their due. He's married and has two kids also. as for me i think that 112 is also a little too fast.

About the ticket, he didn't spend a night in jail and just got a ticket. Maybe because he knows every cop in this county. He even got a cop to race him.

I feel the same way as you do about the speed thing. I prefer the acceleration and the g-force around curves, but of course the tire could blow and i could hurl through a house.

About the only place you could go 160 and be doing it responsibly in a Ford Explorer is at the Salt flats.. I can't think of a race track that has a long enough straight to allow an explorer to get up to speed. We all know how they corner (unless thats wha tyou have modified it to) and I haven't seen any weekend races with explorers in them.. :)

As for going 140+... you do have time to some time to react to things.. but the sentiments expressed are correct... you don't have enough time to react for public driving.. You have to worry about other cars.. road conditions.. cops.. etc.. You need 100% concentration when driving that fast and you just can't do it on public roadways.. just looking around for cops is enough to make you not see something... When you are on a track you don't have to worry about something pulling out in front of you.. you have been on the same piece of track at least a few times.. you know where every corner, bounce, crack etc is on the track.. everyone is going the same way.. and you basically ignore the other riders on the track becuase you are all doing to same thing and don't normally do something not expected..

If you really want to find out how fast your explorer can go.. take it to the salt flats...

I don't know about other explorers, but mine handles curves really good. Better than pickup trucks and other SUV's of the same size and bigger. The only thing I see that stops be from going around curves as fast as most cars is the tires. I have had one of them buckle in on me, under the rim. I was trying to take a curve as fast as my brothers 96 camaro RS. I think I had the 235's on it then too. he has 245/50/16 Performance tires. Mine handles better than the old explorers(91-94). Or at least better then my brother's 91EB with the same exact tire. We bother have the dueler A/T 30's.

Damn! I was wondering what my problem was!

I had a 91 ranger 2wd with the same dashboard as the explorer and when tryed to get top speed the needle would hit under the 1 and start bending. So that OD stuff is not possible. I might be wrong because i haven't tryed it in my explorer.

Just my 2 cents.

I just put my superchip in today, and easily got up to the same as James. check out my post in the modified section. My truck just shifted into 5th when i chickened out. So I had a whole other gear to go. I have a safe way to try this out. Maybe I will be able to do it this weekend.

I just talked to the people that make the Jet Chip and some guys at the local dyno shop. Here is what they tell me. The speed limiter in fords cannot be bypassed on the computer. So if your vehicle has one... tough nookies. Mine cuts me off at 105. They told me if I wanted to get around it..I would have to take it to some sort of rear end shop... something there sends a signal to the tranny.... hmmm... sounds like alot of trouble. Anybody have any experince with this?

nick

that is not true. Superchips moves the speedlimiter to twice what it was. My truck cut off at 95mph, and now with it, I have gotten up to 115. It is true that you cant take it out, but you can move it.

Jet claims the remove or move it when possible...yet with mine in I still capped at 105. Maybe superchip is diffrent or my year is... hmmm

My hypertech chip did not move the speed limiter, it is still at 108. However, there have been a few times when I've gone up to 116. Both with and without the chip, if I very gingerly accelerate so the RPMs slowly creep up, the limiter wont kick in until 116. I don't know why this happens, but it does!
