I am going to dismantle my 5R55E tranny, and I'm stuck after 10 minutes.
The converter won’t come out.
It moves out about 12-14mm (½") and then it's absolutely impossible to get it out.
I have tried to hang it up in a lift with about 1000kg pull, and it's still stuck.
What experience do you tranny-experts have from this?
How much force does it take before something else fails?
I have never seen anything like this, and I have been working with cars and machines for 30 years.

I really need fast help here…

to get the converter out of where?
the converter is stuck on the transmission that has already been removed form the truck?

Its not clear from your post

Yes, it's stuck on the pump shaft.
I am going to rebuild the transmission.
And yes, it's out of the car!
I need to get to the bolts behind the converter, to take away the bellhousing...

Should I just get a grinder and open the front of the converter??

New question:
It's rattling in the converter when I rotate it, is that normal?

does not sound normal no

What was wrong with the trans? why it was pulled?

This is a new one to me!
Can you put the trans in park and turn the converter? If it is stuck real bad maybe its jammed up on the pump shaft = turning it might help?

It's been driven without filter of the previous owner... :thumbdwn:
Slipping very bad!
Why should I not be able to turn it when it's in park??
I don't think the engine would like to stop every time the tranny is in P! :p:
I have tried turning it, twisting it, bending and so on...

yeah my bad, just thinking out loud here LOL

WTF!!!! no filter in the trans? how in the world did it suck up fluid? the pick up tube is part of the filter! Must have been WAY overfull?

No, the pickup where there... He had taken out the filter stuff and then put it together again with silicon.

I haven't encountered this problem yet. Tilt the transmission at an angle, and see if the torque converter could wobble.

It wobbles... It's sticks after 12-15 mm:s, but I can wobble and rotate it all the way!

Just another question;
Would a gearbox from a Ranger 2001 be the same as the Explorer 1997 5R55E?
I have found one cheap in Norway!
Or, what years and cars are the same as in my car?

The sensors are different, but it's possible. Check # 7 in my list of useful threads for more information.

Thank's BrooklyBay!

But it doesn't make me any wiser...
If I change the solenoids to the one from my 97, will it work then?
Or do I have to change the complete valve body?
And I know that there is a newer gearbox in some cars from 2001.
Guess that the new one won't work in a 1997...

I have found a 99 gearbox with only 6000 miles on it for $900.
Think that's fair!
Will I have the same problems with the solenoids on that?

Maybe you should try to get one from another 97?
They are rare in Sweden...

It's done now...
With the help of a grinder!
I had to split the converter to get it out of the bellhousing.
Click on the thumbnail and you can se the hub in the middle that stuck.
It's the center for the stator freewheel...

This is a pic of the parts I cut out to reach the middle of the converter.

The strange thing is that the rest inside the gearbox looks great.
I have not checked the pump, but everything else looks brand new!
Friction Clutches, Steel Plates and bands should be measured tomorrow. But they look nice...

I've found filters in the 4R70W trans swimming in the pan and the vehicle drove fine. That trans has no retaining screw.

Did you find the part inside of the converter that was causing it to be jammed on?

I know my written English sucks...
But I thought that I made it clear in a earlier post!

Or maby you can call it "inner rail" for the freewheel, instead of hub??
I cant find any pictures with the parts names of a converter!
If you look carefully, it's sitting just at the end of the shaft.
The splines where damaged there. But I don't know what caused it!

It picks up oil via the valve body, so yes. It works fine without filter, specially when the oil is hot, witch make the level a lot higher.

More pics after dismantling.

I finally think I know what have happened...
The front bushing for the stators shaft is completely gone.
My guess is that the loss of it started to wobble the stator.
The stator freewheel broke and the rest is history!

The parts in the "cut" converter is what's over from the broken stator freewheel.

I can't get it back in place now.

The shaft for the stator is also damaged.
It should be bushings in both ends, this from the rear is now stuck on the shaft..

This is where the shaft should be.

This is where the bushing suppose to be, not at the shaft.

The rear drum is also damaged, if you have a close look, then you can see a few missing needles in the bearing...

The rest looks just fine, except of small metalparts in the valves...

The next step will be to find parts!
Shipping from more than one supplier in US costs to much. I am now trying to find someone that can ship all I need from only one company!
