97 ford explorer 5.0 awd 4r70w trans. problem torque convertor is locking as soon as it hits second gear, also if I manually shift it to second it will stall out. If i put it in drive it will stay running while sitting still it will also stay running at a stand still if I put it in first but as soon as I put it in second the torque convertor locks and it will stall. when I take of it does fine until it shifts into second then its almost like it shifts twice once into second and again when the torque convertor locks. No matter what the speed is it will stay locked if it is in any gear but first. When stopping as long as i come to a stop in a reasonable manner it will idle fine. It has new fluid in it. I also cut the gron from the pcm to the tcc. pin 54 dark blue white stripe. so if that circuit isn't complete it shouldn't be able to lock at all. I am checking all wiring now if I unplug the pcm and hook a test light to the blue wire and hook other end to positive battery post if it lights up does this mean it is grounding out somewhere. Sorry so long I have been battling this for almost a year want to make sure there is enough info so someone might be able to help me solve this issue it is driving me nuts.

I have had this valvetrain sticking cause the symptoms you described. Known wear item.

I have seen the number 7 check ball deteriorate and blow through the plate, this will cause lockup on top of 2nd gear.

I hooked a test light to the positive battery post on one side and to the negative side of the tcc that comes from pcm. The tcc solenoid has a power wire and a ground and pcm grounds it to turn it on, So if i hooked the light to the negative side of it it shouldnt of lit it unless it was grounded out. So do I have a short somewhere?

James I remember that now. Good call.

If that wire is grounded I would think it would cause a issue like this, however I have not tested one of these with a test light like that.

Just last week I had a F150 that would want to stall the engine in drive sitting still but not manual low, then full uncontrolled lock up in second, third and forth, it also had a few codes for the TCC system.

I found the ground wire pinched in the bell housing from when the customer installed his own rebuilt unit. The shorted wire should set a code.

Well its snowing and 30 in ky today. But my options are to find if and where the wire could be pinched. Also was looking at re-manufactured valve bodies on ebay. This has been doing this for 30000 miles. My od light has flashed so im sure there is a transmission code stored I just hate to go to a dealer to pay them. plus I only paid 350 for explorer. But really like it and would rather figure it out without going to dealer. So I will check wiring better and if I cant find anything I am gonna replace valve body.
