Tow Hitch class?

Hi there.

I'm a new member, but visited as a guest many times. I am thinking of buying a camper trailer and don't know if i have a class 1 or 2 hitch. it's a 1-1/4" size hitch on a 4,0L 02 Explorer Eddie Bauer.

How do I find out the hitch class and towing capacity.

A 1 1/4" hitch is a class 2 hitch. If you have your owners manual, it should outline your towing capacity based on your gearing and engine combination. If you don't have a book, your can look here:

V6 class 2 has a maximum 3500 lbs tow rating. That 3500 lbs includes the loaded weight of the trailer, and any passengers/cargo that you put in the truck.

3500 - (passenger weight) - (cargo in hatch) = max weight of loaded camper
You'll probably have about 2800 lbs capacity, which is about the loaded weight of a mid-sized popup camper.
