I wanted to mount a couple tow hooks in the front of my truck. Is there a place to buy them online?

You can get them at wal-mart, pep-boys, autozone, really any auto parts store. The trick is getting ones that will go for an easy install. On my '91 there really wasn't a place to put them so I had to fabricate a speacial braket for them. Hope that helps

1996

Does anyone have a 1996 or similar that they have put tow hooks on? If so where did you mount them and do you have pictures?

Keith,

I have a tow hook mounted to the frame about 6" behind the bumper. It is accessable through the airdam. It was $15 total in parts, and bolted through existing holes. I think it might be made by Reese. Good luck! BTW, the kit came with bolts, but I needed to get longer and stronger ones to go all the way through the frame.

Keith,
I put Full size GM tow hooks on my 97XLT, but I had to make a 3.5" steel block to lower the hooks so they would go under the bumper. I then drilled all the way through the frame and mounted them with 8.5" grade 8 bolts. The GM tow hooks only cost 20 bucks and are EXTREMELY HEAVY DUTY. You can pick the truck up with them. Here's a couple of pictures.

Above is my 1997 Ford Explorer Sport with front tow hooks.
I had to drill 2 holes in the frame, and insert 2 steel threaded plates into the front opening of the frame so that I have something to thread into since there is not enough room to get a socket or a wrench into the frame to hold the Nut. Yes, I had to remove the bumper so I could be able to insert the steel threaded plates into the frame. The Tow hooks do not stick out at all, and they are accessible from the front air dam.

Ray

Awesome look Ray. Love those GM hooks. Did you just get them at a junk yard? I think that would be cheapest.

CB yours looks good too but I want them to stick out more.

Keith,
I got them at the chevy dealers. $19.95
Don't tell them it's for anything other than a GM. One dealer wouldn't sell them to me, said it's a liability reason, I just went to the other dealer and told him I wanted them for a 97Tahoe, he rang me up and gave me the stuff.

Just a reminder to those interested in the GM tow hooks - - make sure you purchase the SET of hooks (two hooks, four bolts, and two screw plates) instead of the individual hooks. The set lists for about $20-25, but a single hook (without bolts, screw plates) will run almost the same price.... Don't know why, they just price them that way.

'91 Sport

P.S. The GM hooks mount right up to the frame rails for '91-94 Explorers. You will need to either remove the front air dam or cut two notches to access the hooks. All that is required is to remove the front bumper and drill an additional hole in each frame rail, then slide the screw plate into the frame rail and bolt them up.

P.S.S. Ray - Did you ever get the data I sent you for the Con-Ferr roof rack??

I went to the junk yard and wrenched off two from a Chevy truck. I mounted them just like Ray did with some bolts and nuts I picked up and some blocks of metal. Total cost was around 30 dollars.

In case anyone is still interested in the GM tow hooks the part # is 999866 and they cost me $18.27 for the kit.

where?

where did you get them Kampy? My cost was almost $60.00 for a pair? ****, looks like sucker took me for a ride! Hold on, I'll just go and knock all their windows out...................feel better now.

:-(

Later,

I'm also gonna look for a set of clevis's to go through the frame...I've had a hard time finding em, but if ya get them that big, I know they're definately strong enough...Not to mention, I think they look cool hangin from the frame behind the bumpers in the front and rear...Anyways, thanks.....Pete

If you're able to find them big enough please!!!!!!! tell me where. I've been looking all over the place. I don't think they make them that large.

Big Clevis ("D" ring)

Try a farm tractor and ranch shop.

The big D clevis

I got mine at a Farm Supply store. They may have to order it. The opening was 2 1/2" and fit very snug to the frame. I used an existing hole in the frame. Cost about $13.00 bucks. HAven't used it yet, but I was nervous after getting my tires all muddy in Ouray and trying to climb a rock.

Excellent...I go home in a month from college for the Illinois: Attack Attica II so i'm goin out the day I get back lookin to see what they have cause I need them...I'm also trim down a chain that my friend picked up that is used to ull graders and bulldozers outta mud, so it's strong...I'm gonna hang it from the frame rails from the clevis's....Excellent.....Thanks....Pete

Similar to WARN's............

I made this receiver shackle which is similar to WARN's, but I believe it is a Heck of a lot stronger then there's!!!

It cost me about $50 to make it for myself, I might be persuaded to make some more if there was enough of a demand and the price your willing to pay sounds good to me. E-mail me if you have any questions.

I got those hooks on and some pix on my page. Didn't want to waist any space here. Look good but also looks like I got screwed paying $60.00 for them.

How about mounting the hooks on a 2000 XLT?

Has anyone mounted the tow hooks on a 2000? The Ford parts employee laughed at me when I asked him if they had a tow hook assembly available. Punk!
