I should be receiving delivery on my 2002 XLT in the next month.... the XLT comes standard with a Class II tow package and I have purchased a boat which weighs 3400 lbs add the trailer and I'm at 4000lbs.

Question: I see the class II is rated for 3500lbs ... will I be ok with the class II package? does anyone know if it can be upgraded to a Class III after I receive delivery (to late to make the change before delivery)?

Thought the class III was standard on the 02 XLT tow package. Thats how mine came and it had the 7 prong plug and the connector for electric brake controler.

I ordered a 2002 Explorer XLT last April and took delivery in late May. Since I tow a fairly heavy tent trailer (2900 lbs.), I opted for the tow package. I believe the tow package option includes the 7 pin Bargman connector, 3.73 LS (limited slip) axle, class III hitch and possibly extra cooling capacity for the transmission, etc. It is true that if you do not opt for the tow package that the XLT will still have a tow hitch, but I believe it is class II and does not include the 3.73 axle.

My tow package equipped '02 with the SOHC V-6, 2wd and automatic transmission is rated to tow 5960 lbs. I believe the non-tow package equipped Explorers are only rated somewhere around 3000 lbs. Again, I "only" tow half the rated capacity but when you encounter long grades on hot days, you'll be glad you spent the extra $395.00. It does make a difference.

What did you find out

I was wondering if you had upgraded your class II hitch to a class III hitch yet. And if so, I'm considering doing the same. Do you have any advice. Thanks.

How does the new IRS hold up to towing? The new expeditions seem to bow a lot when towing heavy loads, although they sure as heck ride a lot smoother :)
