Is the only way to tow a 91-94 Explorer with automatic transmission behind a RV is to remove the drive shaft or dolly the rear wheels?

Apparently there is no way to fully disengage the drive shaft from the tranny. That if towed in neutral the rear end turns parts of the tranny and with no fluid pump the tranny self destructs?

Or have some of you folks figured out how to tow a Explorer with auto tranny?

The only way that I have seen it done is on a 5th wheel flat bed trailer behind a Dodge 2500 with the Cummins.

I know that when it is towed for mechanical reasons you have to have a flatbed tow it or major problems ensue.

Hope that helps.

When I bought my 92 trail vehicle it had a cable going to the rear drive shaft. You pulled a handle in the cab and it quick disc the drive shaft. This mounted where the drive shaft meets the rear pumpkin. Check around im sure youll find what I am talking about.

Another option would be to put manual hubs on the rear wheels. I've seen it done, but I don't remember where. That way you could unlock the hubs and the transmission wouldn't be affected by the spinning rear wheels. (At least that is what the theory is. If I am wrong someone please correct me.)

Big dave is right. This would be the way to go!

What you want to do is called a "full floater conversion" for the rear 8.8 31 spline axle. It allows you to install Warn manual locking hubs on the rear axle, unlock them both and the axles dont spin, the driveshaft would not spin.
The big advantage to this (the kit is pricey) is that off road you then have the ability to unlock one or both wheels, if you have 4 locking hubs, front and rear lockers, you can have, 1, 2, 3, or 4 wheel drive. Front wheel drive, whatever..........

I think the kit is like $500 and the install is not easy. There was an article about it not too long ago in a 4wheelparts mag. Call them up, they carry the kit.

Or of course you can disconnect the rear driveshaft, it;s not too hard. :)
