Looking for insight from you guys. Have been driving a 00 model XLT for two years now. I am purchasing a boat that weighs about 2700 pounds. It does have trailer brakes, (I'm installing a module for the brakes) I put load adjuster shocks on it. I also made sure I had the transmission cooler. Is there anything else I need to do to improve my towing experience?

I towed my boat with an 08 XLT. The boat was similar in weight to yours. I had no problems. Does the trailer have electric brakes? Most boat trailers have surge brakes. With surge brakes you will not need a controller since the deceleration of the trailer against the hitch causes the brakes to be actuated.

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
I have moved your thread to the proper sub forum since the 2011 - 2017 Explorer is a totally different vehicle.

2700lbs is pretty light, and it sounds like you've covered all the bases. However an auxiliary transmission cooler is a good idea if you have a V6. Also a good idea to check your suspension, be sure the sway bar end links are tight (and there), shocks are in good condition, and ball joints aren't worn out. If you've never flushed the radiator, now would be a good time.

Most importantly, enjoy the boat! :D

Is 2700 the boat weight, or the whole package?

Add trailer, motor, battery, gas, all your stuff and you might be pushing 4500 lbs.

You need to make sure your tongue weight isn't too light (the trailer will sway)

You need to make sure the trailer bearings are in good shape.

Thanks for the replies. It weighs just under 4K with all my stuff in it. The shocks made all the difference in the world. Took it to the lake yesterday and never had an issue. It does have surge brakes on it.
