towing and rear sagging

Hi all,

I am new here and had a quick question. I tow a 5x8 trailer and my rear end sags really bad in the back. The rear end always looked too low to me anyway. What can I do to take care of this problem.

Theres several things you can do. if you wanna eliminate some of this rear sag that you had previous as well as when you tow you can look into a set of add a leafs which can give you around 1" lift in the rear, but they will also Stiffen the rear of you truck a lil bit!

Theres also Warrior Shackles that will give you a lil bit of added lift in the rear but if your only looking into the towing sag, i wouldn't reccomend these

and thers also the Basic Air-Shocks you can put in the rear, but again i ouldn't reccomend these.

BTW whats the Tounge weight of your trailer?

To be sure you do indeed have a sag, I would measure the trucks height at all 4 wheels. Take a tape measure from the ground ( level ground ) and measure to the top of the wheel well lip at all 4 corners.

I just noticed you have a sport, you also have the soft monoleaf in the back of your truck..before you get an add a leaf you will need to get the rear springs out of a 4 door explorer and then get the add a leafs. Even by adding the 4 door leaf packs to the rear of your truck you will notice some improvement

Well I tow a quad and bike on my trailer then with a full load of people and 2 dogs in the back, the thing just about hits the ground. I guess I will go with stiffer shocks in the back and the leaf springs. Is it easy to put those kits on yourself? I am pretty mechanically
inclined.
Any recommendations on stiffer shocks to purchase?

Stiffer Shocks won't get rid of your sag, they will jsut make the ride harsher

I have the same problem pulling a trailer with two quads. I have a four door, and when loaded I squat the rear pretty good. My problem I believe is that my hitch on the 'X' is to low though and all my weight is on the tounge. If that does not work I was looking at going with the air bags because I don't want a 1" lift in the back only, and to have it setting up in the rear when not pullin a trailer.

You don't have to switch over to the four door leaf pack to put an add-a-leaf set on, but it will help. You can also look into a set ofDead Link Removed helper springs... they have full time and part time ones. I have the add-a-leafs on mine and tow a 14' tandem with my B2 on it and I loose about 4" when I hook the trailer up. The add-a-leafs help alot and the Rancho RS5000s help keep me from bounceing with the trailer on too. I am getting a set of the Helwigs and that should help even more.

If you do enough towing, airbags is the way to go. I've actually towed my heaviest loads with the airbag pressure around 80 psi so that the rear is higher than it would be unloaded so that I can get better steering control.

I he was to run an add-a-leaf he would have to switch to 4 door springs, seeing as the sports have only a mono leaf there would be no correct place to put the add-a-leaf.

Your best bet is to go with an air bag set up. Therfore you can to and still sit level and when you arent towing you can let the air out and reatin your ride.

if you do switch to the 4door leaf pack and an add-a-leaf your ride will be a lot rougher.

Sorry, but I know of at least four other people running add-a-leafs on there sports that only have the mono leaf, including my old '98 Sport that I was going to lift prior to getting my '99 XLT... 2001ExpSport comes to mind right away, because he gave me the add-a-leafs I am currently running and he was running them with only a mono leaf. The add-a-leaf goes on the bottom of the leaf pack be it a mono or a four door pack. It will still do what it is designed to do. You also take off the stock helper spring on the bottom when you install the add-a-leaf as it does nothing for you after you put in the add-a-leaf...

Thanks Jason_25 I stand corrected... I was thinking of his stock helper spring he said he took out... She should have the mono on her '98 though.

Dead Link Removed is the link to the mono leaf add-a-leafs, but they do run about $190, so since you can get 2 four door leaf packs for about $100 at a junkyard you may as well go with the four door ones...

FYI, Standard add-a-leafs can't be used because a monoleaf spring is a tapered spring, but the leaf pack used on the 4 door is a semi-elliptical spring. That is why most people think you can't use a add-a-leaf with a mono leaf.

wHAT ABOUT AIR SHOCKS?

I have them on my X. Not by choice, they came on it. Thinkin about gettig rid of them. they don't ride that bad though.
