I did quite a bit of searching but no luck!

I am wondering what you guys figure the limits is to towing with my 94 Explorer, it is equipped with the 5 speed no auto.

I am doing a stage 1 clutch in it here in a few weeks as this OEM one is just about done for,

Thanks for the help!

Well we would need to know more then just what tranny. Need to know gearing, tire size, are you using a 2x2 frame hitch or the bumper. Do you have an oil cooler for the motor? Things like that. then too the stoke towing rates are for a new truck and motor not a high mile truck as normally a high mileage truck has lost some horse power and torque. It the truck lifted and if so was it with a body life or suspension lift. Again they play into it all so as you can see there is no easy answer at all and then when that is all known then you move into tough weight and frontal area of the towed item. Total weight of the trucks gear and passengers as that has to be deducted from the gross load capacity. Are you going to be using a load leveler hitch or just straight towing.

As I said no easy answer as there are so many variables to work into it all and when you think you got it all then you get to add in any head winds, cross winds and such will it be mainly flat ground or hills. And at what elevation not those elevation maters for fuel air mix but it sure plays heck with water / coolant temps and boil over. There is the all fun one of how many extras have you added to your truck like a wench, brush guard and even a tire tied to the top. Is your charging system up to the task if you need to run or charge the towed item also when you’re driving? Again it all plays into how much you can tow sorry to say. I can tell you this my 93 ex has more horse power and torque then my 1984 dodge full size v8 pickup had and I towed a 24 foot travel trailer with it but boy did I pay for it and get forced to learn a lot from it also but still it would handle bigger loads then my ex I have now. So power is not were its all at much much more go's into it.

This is not meant to scare any one from towing but to open there eyes it’s not just a weight thing and a hook it up and move it deal either.

now with all that being said I believe the stoke tow capacity with a 5 speed was only 3,500 lbs at best and that is with the 3.73 rear gear set and a frame mounted hitch. at lest if memory serves me right thats what my owners manual says for the 93 and for towing there were no changes between 93 and 94.
