2002 Sport Trac 4x4 XLT
My silver 2002 Sport Trac blew its head gasket last week at 157k, and this was its second motor. In the past year, the A/C has died and the transmission O/D light blinks every few weeks with knocking from the rear (prob a solenoid issue), and other minor problems. Because it's such a low-MPG vehicle, and my recent move has given me a 75-mile commute in place of a 3-mile commute, I've decided it's time for a new vehicle.

The question is: what's the best thing to do with a dead-engine truck? My mechanic says he'll give me a few hundred for it as-is, basically to use it as a scrap metal bin. Or I can donate it to a charity like cars for kids. I'm not to keen on parting it out myself, because I don't have the room to store a car carcass. Is there an option I'm overlooking?

why do you say it's a low mpg? i've always gotten just under 20 mpg on my 02 ST. What have you been getting?

There's a guy on Long Island on mysporttrac.com that is looking for a parts ST. The one he responded to was listed at $900 but it was no longer available. I'd hop over there and see if Larry is still interested.

With all the issues and two dead motors, I don't think this Trac was in top condition and maintenance was probably pretty spotty.

I'm still getting high teens with 35s on my '01 Job1 with just over 100k miles.

Selling it to me for $400 (more then scrap weight), my wife needs a vehicle to get her and my 9 month old around. Would like to get her a Sport Trac.

I agreed with what your saying, just didn't say it out loud yet. Two motors in less that 160K??? Probably not the best maintenance record. I've got 137K+ and still running strong. Quick somebody find some wood and knock on it for me:D

have factory nerf bars in good shape your willing to sell off ?

Sad to know the co-star of those awesome horn videos has bit the dust. Put it on Craigslist or eBay ........ or sell it to Jerry (MidnightRebel07). Salvage yard doors were $450 each when I was looking for them 3 years ago! Best bet is to sell it in one piece though. I had a helluva time selling my parts truck. Yours being a 4x4 may get a buyer quicker than my 4x2 though.

It got the basic fluids & brake and tire maintenance, but the original engine failed due to worn piston rings (reported misfires, starting leaking oil). We swapped in a junkyard motor (which also had >100k miles on it already) just to see if we could get a little more life out of it, and got another 37k until that engine's gasket blew.

Mileage on this truck was right around 17 MPG highway. Bear in mind it had a lot of extra weight on it--over 900 pounds worth of air compressor, 2 extra batteries and bronze ship horns most of the time. And by "low MPG" I didn't mean low for a truck, but low compared to the commuter car options available now for me to consider as my new daily driver, e.g. a 49 MPG diesel Jetta or a hybrid of some sort.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Bad luck with the engines, though. Good luck whichever way you go.

Oh I so want to make a V8 sport trac......... PM sent

let me know what you would want for it i am very interested if the price is right. its a long trip from south Ga to Boston

I Hope Somebody on here Gets it , Or the new owner gets directed to here , Would love to see a V8 Sport trac here In Ga , What about a Supercharged v6 ST haha

what color interior does it have and what options? Im like 2 hours away .

There's always the option of donating it to a vocational school as a project vehicle.

I'm in CT - also interested in what color interior it has and what options. If you have a gray "high-series" console, I'd love to buy it off of you.

It looks like at this point, I'm going to give the trac a cursory clean up, and throw it up on craigslist as a "for scrap or parts" car. I have two little kids, so the interior is not super clean like it would be if I were a single dude. Also, many minor systems have failed in the last year, and it's been my conscious choice to not fix them, because it's just stupid for me to put money into the truck that would be better off saved as a down payment on my next ride. No dealership would want this 157k 2002 thing as a trade-in, they'd only take it off my hands as a courtesy :-)

To answer everyone's questions as best I can:

1. The truck has nerf bars on it, but they came from an '04 and are black, not the grey ones a silver '02 would have come with. Truck also has a tubular class III hidden hitch on it.

2. I'm not sure about the "high" console question, but I can tell you that this truck has the center console that runs from the base of the dash to the back seats, and has air vents, climate controls and audio controls for the back seat passengers. The overhead console has a place for a garage door opener, a compass/temp display and reading lights.

3. The interior is grey cloth.

Here is everything I found wrong with it while checking it out in prep for listing it:

1. Keyless entry and remote starter no longer work. Presumably there is a battery someplace that died (steering column RF transponder? idk...) If I try to remote start the truck now, it just flashes "THEFT" on the dash.

2. Stock radio has been removed. I replaced it with an Alpine unit when I bought the truck, and didn't save it because it was a POS. The Alpine unit I've since pulled and transferred to my wife's mazda because it had the same wiring harness and her car couldn't even play MP3's!

3. Thermostat housing shows signs of leakage. It didn't leak noticeable amounts of coolant until the head gasket blew, but clearly it had leaked something because there's a white crust on the housing.

4. Read axle seals look leaky now too. Not oil running out over the wheels bad, but the drums look grimy enough that there has to be some oil there.

5. No A/C. Recharged last summer, didn't last. It's leaking out somewhere now.

6. ABS brakes currently not functioning, but easily repaired. A stick snagged the right front sensor wire on a trail ride and broke it, and I never fixed it cause I hate ABS.

7. Busted out rear license plate light.

8. Twice last winter (after the engine replacement), the transmission hesitated to shift from 2nd to 3rd and started the "O/D" light flashing. Both times it was on a very, very cold morning. Probably a solenoid stuck? Both times the truck kept running normally (not in limp home mode) and the light was cleared next time I started it. I originally thought the light was coming on more often, but it turns out that I was hitting the actual O/D button while shifting.

Minor dents and scrapes here and there typical for a 10-year old truck.

When I list the truck, it will have photos.
