Traction-Lok "S" clip/spring

Is there a trick to getting this clip/spring in and out? I had a tough getting mine out today and I'm not sure how I will get it back in after I replace my spider gears.

Never mind. I found a video.

S-clip? I know you figured it out but the C-clip either falls out or takes forever to force out

Bill

Not the C-clip, the S-clip. This is a limited-slip diff.

You can compress it slightly with a C-clamp to get it started, then tap it in with a hammer. Remove the clamp and tap it in the rest of the way.

Yeah, the video I found showed compressing the "S" clip in a bench vise and then pinning it together with a pair of long nose/needle nose vise grips and using a hammer to smack it in.

I have rebuilt over 20 8.8 rears and I have never heard of a S clip.

Now I have heard of a S spring. It adds side load to the side gears...lol

Come on guys it's a spring and is in no way a clip.

I've heard that if you rebuild the 8.8 with an extra clutch disc you can leave out the s spring so it doesn't drag.
Comment?

Having just taken my 8.8 apart, I don't see how that's even possible. the clutch discs sit on a boss on the side gears and have ears that lock into the diff case.

Give me a break. Spring, clip you know what I meant. Semantics.

Yeah, I add the extra disc all the time but I keep the S spring. The more pressure on the clutch pack the better.

EDIT.... I just looked at that link and that is NOT how I do it.

Why would you grind of clutch material? The correct way to do this, shown to me by my Ford trained mechanic Uncle, is to add the extra disc then reshim the pack.

As long as you can get the spiders to rotate back into position with some resistance you shimmed correctly.
