Trailer connector

I have a 1999 Explorer xlt, and would like to install a trailer hitch and 4 prong flat connector for my utility trailer, yard debris etc.

After viewing previous posts it appears a connector for an aftermarket harness should be located behind the bumper.

I find nothing except for a connector just under the left light tail light assembly and just under the right tail light assembly.

I find the fuse #7 with a 7.5 amp fuse for towing and I find a transmission cooler in front of my radiator.

But no connector or wiring just off center behind the bumper.

Any advice ?

theres an adapter that plugs into a roundish connector under the drivers taillight. The dealer used to sell a kit with a mount for the plug, not sure if they still do.

Curt makes a T-Connector for the Explorer if you can't find the OEM style connections. It's supposed to just be a plug & play, but the T-Connector is a bit pricey compared to the easy wiring kits.

The T-connector is NOT the connector to use on a second'gen Explorer. It'll use the truck's lights to power the trailer... and there's no need.

ALL second-gen Explorers come pre-wired with all the factory trailer tow wiring needed for a 4-flat. The connector is, as mentioned, up behind the driver's side taillight. You can access it from underneath, or pop the taillight out and it's right there. The dealer as well as many aftermarket companies (Curt included, Hoppy and Draw-Tite to name some others) make the harness that'll plug right into that connector. Note that the 95 thru early 97 uses a slightly different wiring pattern in that connector from the later 97-01s. They're not all the same. IIRC, it's around $40 from the dealer for the kit that includes the wiring harness, the bracket for the receptacle that goes on the bumper, and the bolt to hold the bracket to the bumper.

I know the T-Connector is not necessary, but if it's all you can find it works great. I've had absolutely no problems with it. the kits all seem to be for completely different things, at least around here anyways.
