Hi, I see a connector mounted under the rear bumper. I pryed the cap off and there are 4 rows of pins with some kind of orange seperator between them. Is this a connection for trailer lights? And if so what is the configuration? Thank you GB

It sort of sounds like a trailer connector, but those are typically one row of four pins (there are others, such as round, but these are the most common).

To test this (assuming it's connected and still working), get a test light or voltmeter. Connect the ground lead to the ground pin on the connector (the insulation should be molded to make one pin look different than the rest.

Then, turn on your parking lights and connect the other lead to the other pins, one at a time. You should see current on one of the wires.

Next, turn off the lights, do KOEO, and turn on one of the turn signals. Repeat the test procedure, you should see one of the remaining two wires show a blinking current.

You can test the other side if you like, but once you confirm that you're only getting a blinking current in any of those wires at the same time your turn signal is on, you can basically guarantee it's a trailer connector.

The plug on the right side of my picture, is what connects to the plug you'r talking about. then the other plug in my picture is the 4 prong that hooks to the trailer lights.

Make sense?

Excellent Pic Froader, that's the baby all right. Thanks for the offer, but you down the road a bit. I'm in ct.

You can get this part at WalMart, AutoZone, etc. or any RV dealer.

Yea, that should be the trailer connector. When I did mine, for some reason, none of the kits was correct--they all wanted to splice off of the wires in the taillights. I researched it out and made my own adaptor to a four pole flat trailer connector. You need all seven pins to do it (Two for each trailer "light" plus a common ground). I know I posted a hand-drawn generic schematic here sometime in the last few years. If you can't find an appropriate adaptor, it isn't difficult to make one.

as long as were talking about trailer connectiions, i have the 4 prong connector attached to my bumper, and i know it works good. the thing i was wondering is since theres no hitch but there is wiring, is it possible theres a tranny cooler installed? and where would i look to find out? what would it look like?

Not sure that this is related. Most (all?) Gen 1 Explorers came stock with an auxilliary tranny cooler, regardless of having a tow package. They are located behind the grill, in front of the A/C condensor. They are connected to two rubber lines that route under the A/C condensor and radiator and connect to the steel tranny lines just behind the radiator.

Hope this helps!

Need schematic!

I'm having trouble finding a schematic for the factory connection. I need to go from the factory to a 7-way round vehicle end. Anyone know where I can get the schematic so I can wire in my own setup? Already have the flat four pin, need 7-way round. (93 Explorer EB)
