My internal round 4 pin plug under the left bumper is dead and won't pass 12V to the trailer's harness.

Whats involved in replacing this - do I cut the wires to eplace the plug or is there an internal connector further up in the chassis? If so - what has to be removed to get at it?

Right up under the bumper there is a connection. But if it is dead I doubt it is in the last 12" of the wiring. Have you checked all your fuses and whatnot? But I would definitely check to make sure the connection is still there.

and no I have not yet checked the fuses which I will do today.

If its not a fuse how is that plug wired forward and whats involved in replacing it?

Mine didn;t work either, so I just bypassed it entirely - I hardwired new splices into the actual tailight wires, and run them out from under the lenses to the middle of the truck behind the bumper, then bundle them together and splice on a plug. all you need to do is strip a little bit of insulation in the middle of a wire, wrap the new wire aroun d the bald spot and add a dab of solder, then tape it up or paint it with liquid plastic, the turn on the lights and watch for smoke and the smell of burning rubber.

Factory trailer wiring?

There are relays behind the drivers side cargo panel, check there for burnt out relays, or loose connections.
