After the explorer sits for around 5-6 hours i go to leave and it is stuck in first gear for around 7 mins then shifts into second and drives normally. I have a 92 sport with the push button 4wd, and it has fluids. I'm not proficient when if comes to these things and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on the problem? it had this same problem 4-5 months ago and i took it in and had the transmission rebuilt and most the parts were replaced. But now its doing it again.:(

Any help or ideas is very appreciated. Thank You

Sounds like the classic stuck governor. I drove mine like that for a while, shifted it between 1st and 2nd manually until it warmed up, then it was fine.

Check the governor, intermediate band, modulator, and kick down cable. Do you notice this happening at certain temperatures? Do you have any issues with any other gears? It could also be VB gaskets, and loose VB bolts. If you have a 0-300 PSI pressure gauge, check what the pressure is when you have this problem.

While the list of possibles is longer than simply the governor, that is a classic set of symptoms for sticking governor, as noted above. I'd replace the governor as my first effort.

If you just had the transmission rebuilt, wasn't there a guarantee?

I'd like to thank everyone for their thoughts and ideas to my problem so far. I do have a warrenty on the transmission and will be taking it back for them to fix, but just wanted some ideas from other on what the problem was to check it against the parts that were replaced. Unfortunatly I dont have the knowlege or tools to look into it myself, and the explorer is all stock so i dont have any extra gagues to monitor other things and try and diagnose it.

But in the meantime I found that if I put it into second gear for 30 seconds to a minute then switch to drive it usually shifts right away and drives normally. Hopefully this wont have any adverse effects on anyting, i dont think is should.

Thank you all
