My Explorer with automatic transmission will run fine but every once in a while when i stop at a stop sign and try to go it doesn't move and takes a while to get it going again. almost like it is not going in gear. trans fluid was low and topped it of still having issue. Trans fluid does smell normal.
Also how can more oil be in my car than was put in?

it is a 1992 ford explorer with automatic transmission.

not yet that is this weekends project.

Did you get this fixed? I'm having what seems to be the exact same issue in my '92 Ranger. My fluid level is fine. No heat issues. I have been reading everything I can find - sure hope it is this simple.

I figure I'll do the band adjustment while I'm there. ...Also wondering the solenoid for the reverse shift delay.

yes

I change the fluid and filter this weekend and so far so good. A total difference than before.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know! I hope to get mine changed by the end of the weekend to see where things stand.

yeap mine is having this issue as well mostly when its been sitting for a few hours. Once it warms up it stops doing it. I changed the filter and that helped for a little while but didn't cure it.

i have a 2002 4.6 v8 explorer with 98000ks on the clock sorry im in australia so i recon thats about 60894 mile (dont know what auto is in it but its a 5 speed od)
and having a similar problem that if its been cold/sat for a while it will take a second to pick up a gear , was going to adjust and service the auto shortly to see if this cures it
a few months ago if i braked hard and the tried to take off again it would do the same thing but hasnt for a while (well i havent braked hard for a while anyways)

Mine was good for a week after tranmission filter change then it started screwing up again.:thumbdwn:

mines doing the same, but it does it going into any gear at startup and when i stop anytime between until it warms up, it'd be nice to get this solved. i thought the torque converter but peolpe are saying no

Long overdue update...

Well, I changed the filter/fluid. I had also ordered the seal for the low/reverse gear servo to change while I was in there. Good thing -that seal was so worn out that the servo fell out into my hand! (and for some reason the spring was completely missing.)

Unfortunately, once I got everything back together and went to test it, I ran into another snag. You see, I had the rear wheels up on ramps and the fronts on jack stands (maybe not the smartest decision). SO, when I was about to put the tranny into gear, I thought: "hmmmmm.... if this grabs and lurches, I could be in a heap of trouble." (Of course, the metal clip for e-brake cable had rusted away a while before, so it was useless.) Anyhow, I pushed down a little harder on the brake and then.... the pedal fell to the floor. Ugh. Tried it once more: straigt to the floor. So, I got out and looked - sure enough, one of the brake lines had blown and was squirting fluid all over the floor.

So, once I got the brake line replaced (a week or two later), I was able to finally test the tranny. ....IT WORKED! And the 1st gear delay/clunk was gone. Only it didn't seem to want to go engage OD - but I still hadn't done the band adjustment.

Now for the sad part.... I got rid of the truck less than a month after that. For better or worse, I decided to trade it on a cash-for-clunkers deal and got the wifey a new car. I miss having a little work truck (I now drive her old car), but I couldn't argue with the deal. I got as much out of the truck as I had into it from the time I bought it in 2005 - plus I had driven it and used it for many projects over 4 years and 40K miles and the wifey is very happy. ;) ...nevertheless, I still miss the little bugger.

Anyhow, I don't foresee being able to afford another truck for a few years. So I won't be around here much, if at all. Even though I didn't post much here, I read quite a few of your posts over 4 years. Thanks for all the tips and advice. Take care and so long. :salute:
